The name most players mean by “the old Bloxburg owner” is Coeptus, the name associated with the original creator and account history of Welcome to Bloxburg. The game’s ownership story has three separate threads, though, and they are often blended together: the original creator account, a company-level acquisition, and the studio that leads development today.
Who Coeptus is in Bloxburg’s history
Coeptus is the name tied to Bloxburg’s earliest public identity on Roblox. A participant in the Roblox Developer Forum wrote on 25 February 2024 that the experience’s visible attribution had moved from the Coeptus account to the Bloxburg Development group. That post is a community observation of what players could see on the platform. It is not an official Roblox ownership record, and it does not establish who holds the game’s legal rights.
The 2022 acquisition: Shortcake AB and Coffee Stain
The larger corporate change is documented in Coffee Stain’s own company description. It states that Embracer Group acquired Shortcake AB, the developer of Welcome to Bloxburg, in 2022 and placed the company under the Coffee Stain umbrella. Coffee Stain’s materials list Welcome to Bloxburg in its portfolio.
This is a transaction between companies. It is a different kind of change from the Roblox account-to-group attribution described above, and the two should not be treated as the same event.

Who develops Bloxburg today
Coffee Stain Göteborg’s studio page describes the team as the group leading the game’s continued development. The page says: “We’re a small, passionate team leading the ongoing development of Welcome to Bloxburg, the iconic life-sim experience that first launched in 2016 and continues to inspire millions of players on Roblox.” The statement is credited to the studio, not to a named individual.
The official game page names Coffee Stain Group AB under “Developed By.” Together, these describe the current development context. They do not erase the earlier creator association.

Three roles, three different answers
Most confusion comes from using the word “owner” for roles that are not the same. The table separates them.
| Role | Who the sources name | What the evidence shows | Date | Source type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original creator and account history | Coeptus | Public Roblox attribution was under the Coeptus account before showing the Bloxburg Development group | Observed in a forum post dated 25 February 2024 | Community post by a Roblox Developer Forum participant |
| Company acquisition | Embracer Group acquired Shortcake AB, which developed the game; Coffee Stain is the umbrella | Acquisition of the developer company and inclusion under Coffee Stain | 2022 | Coffee Stain company description |
| Current development | Coffee Stain Göteborg leads continued work; Coffee Stain Group AB is listed as developer | Present-day studio and developer attribution | Current official pages at the time of writing | Coffee Stain studio page and official game page |
What the sources do not establish
- A personal sale by Coeptus. The official material describes Embracer’s acquisition of Shortcake AB. It does not say that Coeptus personally sold the game, and that claim should not be repeated as fact.
- The exact legal transaction. The forum post explains the visible Roblox attribution change. It does not document the contracts or rights transfers behind it.
- Coeptus’s current involvement. None of the sources used here state whether Coeptus has any role in Bloxburg today.
- Any named individual’s quote about the earlier ownership. No such statement was found in the sources, so none is reproduced.
How to describe the history accurately
The clearest accurate version is this: Bloxburg began under the Coeptus account on Roblox, its attribution later moved to the Bloxburg Development group as observed in 2024, and the developer Shortcake AB was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022 and brought under Coffee Stain. Coffee Stain Göteborg now leads development, and the official game page lists Coffee Stain Group AB as developer. Each of these claims has a different date and a different kind of evidence behind it, so each should be stated with its own qualifier.

Dates also matter for the launch year. Coffee Stain Göteborg says the game first launched in 2016. That is the only launch date used here, and it should not be read as a measure of player numbers or commercial value, which the sources do not address.
Corporate roles on Roblox can change again. If you are reading this later, check the current Roblox game page for the listed creator and group, and Coffee Stain’s own pages for the current developer.
