StreetPass works only when two compatible Nintendo 3DS family systems meet the right conditions: both must be on with wireless communication enabled, in Sleep Mode, close enough, and set up for the same StreetPass-enabled game or app. Check those basics first, then look at repeat-encounter limits, restrictions, and whether the problem affects one title or the whole system.
First, check the conditions for a StreetPass exchange
- Leave the system on and close it. The console needs to be powered on and in Sleep Mode—not powered off.
- Enable wireless communication. The physical wireless control varies by model; Nintendo provides separate instructions for original Nintendo 3DS/3DS XL and Nintendo 2DS/New Nintendo 3DS family systems in its wireless setup guide.
- Keep the systems nearby. Nintendo’s setup tips recommend a distance of 90 feet or less. That is a proximity guideline, not a guarantee: both systems and the relevant software still need to be configured correctly. See Nintendo’s StreetPass instructions.
- Do not leave an active Nintendo DS game running. Nintendo warns that an active DS game in Sleep Mode can interfere with StreetPass.
Check StreetPass in both system settings and the game
StreetPass is not one switch that automatically enables every game. Nintendo says to activate it in system settings and separately within each compatible game or application. Open the affected game’s own StreetPass settings or prompt, and check its manual if the option is not obvious. The other person must have a compatible 3DS-family system and StreetPass enabled for the same software. Nintendo’s StreetPass feature overview notes that up to 12 applications can be activated for StreetPass simultaneously.

Use the pattern of the failure to narrow it down
Only one game or app is affected
Recheck that title’s StreetPass setting on your system and the other system. To refresh the affected title’s setting, Nintendo recommends launching the software from the HOME Menu and reactivating StreetPass for it. This is different from simply enabling wireless communication at the system level.
Several games or apps are affected
Review wireless communication and parental restrictions, which can restrict StreetPass activity. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance also suggests deactivating StreetPass for StreetPass Mii Plaza as a diagnostic step if multiple titles are affected. For general Mii Plaza issues, Nintendo recommends installing the current system update and updating the Mii Plaza app; those updates address software stability, not whether another StreetPass user is nearby. See Nintendo’s Mii Plaza troubleshooting page.

You are not getting a new exchange from someone you met before
Nintendo says the same two systems cannot exchange again with each other for at least eight hours. Also consider whether that person was blocked during an earlier exchange. These limits can explain a missing repeat encounter even when both systems are otherwise set up correctly; see Nintendo’s StreetPass communication troubleshooting steps.
Know the Mii Plaza limit—and what it does not mean
Nintendo says StreetPass Mii Plaza can receive up to 10 Mii exchanges in one session. After collecting 10 Mii characters, enter the Plaza and interact with them in Find Mii or Puzzle Swap. This is a Mii Plaza session limit, not a limit on StreetPass exchanges across all games.
StreetPass still works locally; SpotPass is different
StreetPass exchanges data through local communication between Nintendo 3DS family systems. Nintendo says it remains available after the discontinuation of general 3DS and Wii U online services. SpotPass relies on online communication, and those features are no longer available. Some Mii Plaza content that relied on online services—such as receiving new Puzzle Swap panels—is unavailable, even though local StreetPass encounters can still happen. See Nintendo’s online-services announcement.

If StreetPass fails across titles after you have checked wireless communication, parental restrictions, and each game’s settings, follow Nintendo’s communication troubleshooting sequence. If the problem persists after those steps, Nintendo says service may be necessary. Service eligibility depends on the console model, region, and current support status; Nintendo notes that some older 3DS-family systems are no longer serviced. Check the troubleshooting page for model-specific guidance before pursuing repair or replacement.
