Script mods usually stop showing up for one of five reasons: the game turned mods off after an update, one of the two required mod settings is off, the files sit in the wrong folder or too deep inside Mods, the download was never extracted, or the mod no longer matches the installed game version. Start with the folder and settings checks below, because they take minutes and fix most cases. Compatibility is the next suspect after a patch.
Mods for The Sims 4 are an official option only on PC and Mac. EA states that mods cannot be downloaded on PlayStation or Xbox, so console players should not follow the steps below.
Step 1: Confirm you are checking the active user folder
EA’s installation guidance points to the Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 folder inside your user directory. If no Mods folder exists there, you can create one. On Windows, the Sims Team blog gives the usual location as DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4Mods.
Many “missing mod” reports come from a second copy of the folder. If you put files in one Mods folder while the game reads another, the mods will never appear. To check, move every mod file out of the Mods folder, relaunch, and look at the in-game mod behaviour. If the game still reports mods, it is reading a different active folder, and the EA Forums troubleshooting guidance recommends locating that folder before doing anything else.

Step 2: Check both mod settings for script mods
Script mods need two settings enabled, not one. The general toggle is listed in EA’s installation article, and the script-specific setting comes from an EA Forums information post. Go to the following path in the game:
- Launch The Sims 4 and open Game Options.
- Select the Other tab.
- Turn on Enable Custom Content and Mods.
- Turn on Script Mods Allowed.
- Quit the game completely and relaunch it. Mods that were already in place will not load until the restart.
If custom content (CC) appears but script mods do not, the second toggle is the usual cause. Custom content and script mods are separate categories, so a working CC setup does not prove script mods are enabled.

Step 3: Check script-file folder depth
The EA Forums information post says a script mod’s .ts4script file may sit directly in Mods or one folder below it, and no deeper. The table shows the rule with examples.

This depth rule applies to script mods only. It is not a general limit on how deep other custom content can be nested, so do not reorganise every CC file to match it.

Step 4: Make sure the download was extracted
EA says .zip and .rar downloads must be extracted before use. A zipped archive sitting in Mods does nothing. Extract the archive, then move the unzipped contents into the Mods folder, following the folder structure the creator provides. Some creators package dependencies alongside the script mod; keep them together.
Step 5: If the problem started after a game update
EA disables mods after an update because a change in the game can make a previously working mod incompatible. Mods are not removed, but they stay inactive until you re-enable them. EA’s update guidance states: “A Mod may need to be fully reinstalled to be compatible with the latest game patch.” It is not guaranteed that every mod needs reinstalling, so check the creator’s notes first.

Work through these steps in order:
- Before anything else, launch the game with mods disabled and confirm it runs normally.
- Quit without saving if the game asks whether to save while mods are off. EA warns that saving while modded content is disabled can remove that content from the save.
- Check the mod creator’s website or page for a statement that the mod works with the latest update. Read the creator’s instructions for replacing an outdated version.
- Replace or update the mod as the creator directs, delete
localthumbcache.packagefrom your user folder, and restart the game with both mod settings enabled.
Before replacing anything, back up your Saves and Mods folders. The Sims Team blog warns that outdated mods can sometimes cause lasting save problems, and a backup is the only reliable way to undo that.

EA Help says there is no single way to tell whether mods are causing a problem. Its recommended method is to remove mods, add them back in batches, and narrow any failing batch by halves. Start by removing gameplay mods before custom content, because gameplay mods are more likely to cause issues.

The 50/50 method works like this:
- Move half of your mods out of the Mods folder and relaunch.
- If the problem disappears, the culprit is in the half you removed. Put that half back and move half of it out.
- If the problem remains, the culprit is in the half still in place. Repeat with that half.
- Keep dependent mods together during the test. Splitting a mod from the file it depends on creates a false failure.
- Test in a fresh save. This separates a mod problem from a problem with one save file.
If you still see unexplained failures after isolation, use the launcher’s repair or verification option. The Sims Team blog names the EA app repair, Epic verification, and Steam file-integrity verification. Use these only after confirming the folder and settings, because repairing the game does not change a mod’s location or the Script Mods Allowed setting.
Error codes as clues
EA Help links certain error codes to script problems and mod updates. These codes help narrow a problem but do not identify which mod is responsible.

What is and is not established
The causes above are the ones EA’s official guidance and the EA Forums information post name. No published figure shows how often each cause occurs, so no single cause should be treated as the most likely for your setup. Whether a particular script mod works with the current game version depends on that mod and its creator, so check the creator’s current update notes rather than relying on an older post. EA also states that Maxis and EA do not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific mods, so download only from creators or sources you trust.
