Cube World still has players because its Steam release pairs a self-directed voxel fantasy world with action combat, crafting, and online co-op, and because some returning fans want to revisit the earlier Alpha-era game. The sources available do not measure why most people play or how many play regularly. What can be verified as of October 8, 2026 is narrower: the game remains listed on Steam with single-player and online co-op, and its community pages remain active.
What the Steam release offers
Cube World is a voxel-based action RPG set in a procedurally generated fantasy world. The Steam store listing names four classes, Warrior, Ranger, Mage, and Rogue, and lists action combat, crafting, tamable pets, quests, residents to help, large monsters, dungeons, lore, artifacts, and single-player or online co-op. The listed Steam release date is September 30, 2019.
That feature list explains what the game makes possible: pick a destination, explore, fight, collect, craft, and return with friends. It does not show that every system is deep or satisfying. A store listing is an inventory of features, not an assessment of quality.
Why players keep returning
The reasons below are plausible explanations drawn from the game’s features and from individual player comments. None of them comes from a survey, and none should be read as the dominant reason people play.
#1 Best Overall
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Self-directed exploration
The procedural world, map, quests, dungeons, and travel tools let players decide their own order of play. Destinations, side activities, and fights can be pursued in any sequence, which suits players who prefer wandering over a fixed story path. This explanation rests on the feature set, not on player data.
Co-op with friends
Because Steam lists online co-op, playing with friends is a documented option. The Steam Community page includes players looking for co-op partners, which shows that the interest exists. It does not show how often co-op sessions actually happen.

Challenge and an unhurried pace
One Steam discussion commenter reports 90 hours in the game and says they still enjoy it, describing the clearing of a region as a satisfying session. That is one player’s experience, and it illustrates one way the game can hold attention for a long time.
Nostalgia
A recent Reddit post puts the motive plainly: “I want to play this game for nostalgia.” The post shows how a returning fan talks about the game. It does not indicate how large a nostalgia-driven group is.

Attachment to the Alpha-era game
Community discussions separate the Steam release from the earlier Alpha. Players who remember the Alpha may be drawn by its premise and world even if they prefer the older build. Access to that build is limited. An unofficial community FAQ says the Alpha is no longer downloadable through the route it describes, although retained copies may still work.
The region reset that divides players
According to the same unofficial community FAQ, in the Steam release equipment loses strength when the player enters a new region and must be replaced with gear found there. Some artifacts provide persistent travel-related bonuses that carry over.

- Hall Effect Analog Triggers: The GameSir precision-tuned Hall Effect analog triggers provide unmatched smoothness and linear input for precise control. Featuring clicky Micro Switch trigger stops, gamers can easily switch based on their preferences.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate on PC: Experience ultra-responsive gaming with a 1000Hz polling rate on PC, available through both wired and 2.4G wireless connections. This ensures instantaneous input registration, reducing lag and optimizing your performance for the most competitive gameplay.
- GameSir Nexus App: The G7 Pro is compatible with the upgraded GameSir Nexus app, which brings a significant upgrade over the original. It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
Reactions to this mechanic are split. In one Steam discussion, a player who reports 90 hours frames each new region as a fresh start. Other comments in the same thread call the mechanic repetitive and harmful to long-term progression. These are individual reactions, not a consensus, and whether the reset feels like a loop or a chore depends largely on what a player wants from progression.
- It tends to read as a fresh adventure loop if you enjoy exploring each region fully and see gear as disposable scenery for the next stage.
- It tends to read as a grind if you want equipment to build up over time or dislike repeating the search for gear.
What “still playing” can and cannot show
Several public signals are often read as evidence of a living player base. Each measures something narrower than that.

| Signal | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Steam store listing (accessed October 8, 2026) | The game is listed for purchase with single-player and online co-op | Current price, concurrent players, or how many people play regularly |
| 4,758 English Steam reviews, 38% positive (snapshot, October 8, 2026) | Overall reviewer sentiment across the review history | Current player count or retention |
| 14 recent Steam reviews, 28% positive (snapshot, October 8, 2026) | Sentiment among a very small recent sample | A trend, because 14 reviews is too few to indicate direction |
| SteamDB metadata record update, July 22, 2026 | The store-level record was updated on that date | A gameplay patch; the update is not evidence of new game content |
| Steam Community discussions and guides | Community activity remains visible | Size of the active player base or frequency of gameplay updates |
Taken together, these signals support two statements: the game is still available for purchase on Steam, and a community presence remains visible. They do not establish a large player base or ongoing gameplay development.

Readers often conflate the three versions of the project. The table separates what the sources establish for each.
| Aspect | Steam release | Alpha build | Omega |
|---|---|---|---|
| Availability | Listed for purchase on Steam as of October 8, 2026 | Per an unofficial community FAQ, no longer downloadable through the route it describes; retained files may still work | Not confirmed; no release date established in the sources reviewed |
| Co-op | Online co-op listed | Not stated | Not stated |
| Region gear reset | Equipment weakens on entering a new region, per an unofficial community FAQ | Not stated | Not stated |
| Mod support | Steam Workshop described as not officially supported, per an unofficial community FAQ | Not stated | Not stated |
| Announcement or release date | Steam release date September 30, 2019 | Not stated | Announced May 25, 2023, per an unofficial community FAQ |
| Purchase terms | Sold as a Steam digital product | Not stated | Unknown whether it would be a free update or a separate purchase; the FAQ’s authors said they did not know |
Because the FAQ describing Alpha access and the Steam Workshop is an unofficial community source, the details in those cells should be checked against the Steam store page and official channels before you act on them.
Is it worth returning to?
The game suits a particular kind of player, and the available evidence points to the following fit.
Recommended Free Tools
- It may suit you if you want open-ended exploration, enjoy long sessions within a single region, and can accept gear resets as part of the loop.
- It may suit you if you plan to play with friends, since online co-op is listed on Steam.
- It may not suit you if you want equipment to persist as you advance or find the reset repetitive.
- It may not suit you if you need evidence of a large, active multiplayer population or current gameplay updates. The sources reviewed do not provide either.
- Check first the Steam store page for current price, platform details, and terms before you buy, since those were not confirmed in the sources reviewed.
Cube World’s continuing appeal rests on what the game offers and on the people who choose to return to it. Those reasons are real, but they are individual and anecdotal, and they should be weighed as such.
