You can’t add Multishot to a crossbow that already has Piercing. Those enchantments are incompatible in ordinary Minecraft gameplay. Use a different crossbow without Piercing if you want Multishot.
Why Multishot won’t apply
Minecraft does not allow Multishot and Piercing on the same crossbow through ordinary gameplay. Minecraft’s official Village & Pillage announcement describes Multishot as splitting an arrow into three projectiles and states that it cannot be combined with Piercing.
Multishot and Piercing have different effects: Multishot fires projectiles in a spread, while Piercing lets an arrow continue through mobs so it can hit more than one. The official Minecraft snapshot notes also describe these crossbow enchantments and their incompatibility.
What to check
- Look at the crossbow’s enchantments. If it has Piercing, use another crossbow for a Multishot setup.
- Make sure you’re enchanting a crossbow. Multishot is a crossbow enchantment, not a bow enchantment. Microsoft’s Bedrock enchantment reference lists Multishot for crossbows and describes it as firing three arrows per shot.
- Choose based on the targets. Multishot spreads projectiles toward nearby targets; Piercing is for targets lined up along an arrow’s path. Neither is universally better.
If the crossbow has no Piercing
If the item has no Piercing and Multishot still will not apply, the available official descriptions do not establish one universal cause. Check that you have selected a crossbow and review the method you are using to enchant it. A world or server with commands, add-ons, or mods may behave differently; the ordinary incompatibility rule does not establish how every customized setup works.
