Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA Workshop mod that is missing from Project Zomboid usually comes down to one of four problems: the mod doesn’t match your game build, Steam hasn’t finished the download, the mod is subscribed but never enabled, or it is enabled in a different context from the one you’re testing (the main menu, an existing save, a hosted game, or a dedicated server). The title alone can’t tell you which one applies to your setup. Work through the checks below in order, and note the first step that fails, because that tells you which branch to follow.
Start with the low-risk checks
- Confirm the mod supports your build. Project Zomboid has more than one build branch, and the folder structure of a mod can differ between Build 41 and Build 42. Compare the branch you are running (shown in the game’s version information) with the compatibility details on the mod’s Workshop page. A guide or mod written for one build may not apply to the other. The PZ Troubleshooter guide makes the same point: https://pztroubleshooter.org/mods/mods-not-showing-up/
- Let the Steam download finish. Subscribing starts the download, but the mod is not usable until Steam has finished it. If Steam is still transferring the item, wait for it to complete before judging the result.
- Restart Steam, then Project Zomboid. Relaunch both programs and open the Mods menu again. A mod that was downloaded while the game was running often doesn’t appear until the game restarts.
- Stop before deleting or moving files. If the mod still isn’t listed after steps 1 to 3, the cause is almost always in activation or configuration, not in a missing file. Random folder moves and deletions tend to make the diagnosis harder.
Subscribed is not the same as enabled
A Workshop subscription downloads a mod to your machine. It does not activate it. A Steam Community discussion from March 2022 describes the usual sequence: subscribe on the Workshop page, then activate the mod in the Mods section of the main menu, then enable it for the specific game. Hosts and dedicated-server operators configure it in their server settings instead. This is user-contributed guidance written before the current builds, so use it to understand the distinction between the steps rather than as an exact list of menu labels. https://steamcommunity.com/app/108600/discussions/0/3191369524221046939/
If the mod never appears in the main-menu Mods list at all, the problem is usually in steps 1 to 3 above. If it appears in the list but doesn’t affect play, go to the context check that matches where you’re playing.
Check the save you are actually loading
Symptoms split at this point. A mod that is visible in the main-menu list but has no effect in your game is often not enabled for the save you loaded. A January 2025 Steam Community discussion, which is anecdotal, reports that activation can be save-specific: the poster opened the save’s options and managed its mods there rather than relying on the main-menu list. Treat this as something to test on your own save, not as a universal fix. https://steamcommunity.com/app/108600/discussions/0/592887273543987650/

Keep the save context in mind when you compare results. A change you make to a save doesn’t carry over to a new game, and a mod that is active in one save may be absent from another.
Hosted and dedicated servers use a separate configuration path
If you play on a server, the mod has to be configured on the server, not just in your own game. The branch depends on what kind of server you run.

- Hosted game (you host for friends): Open the server configuration for your hosted game and confirm the mod is listed there. Your local Mods menu does not control what the server loads.
- Dedicated server: The server configuration uses two different identifiers, a Workshop item ID and a mod ID. They are not interchangeable. Do not enter the numeric Workshop ID in the
Mods=field. WinterNode’s setup guide explains the two values; check the guide that matches your server type because configuration details can vary by build and environment. https://winternode.com/help/games/project-zomboid/setup/adding-mods-to-your-project-zomboid-server - Joining someone else’s server: You can’t fix the server’s configuration yourself. Ask the host to confirm the mod is active on the server, and check that you have the same mod and build version the host is running.
Keep Workshop downloads separate from manual installs
Steam Workshop content and manually installed mods live in different places and are managed differently. Mixing them up is one of the most common ways to end up with a mod that looks installed but doesn’t load.
| Attribute | Steam Workshop content | Manual mod folder |
|---|---|---|
| Location | The workshop/content/108600 folder inside your Steam library’s steamapps directory (108600 is Project Zomboid’s Steam app ID) |
The Zomboid/mods folder in your user profile |
| Who manages it | Steam, through subscribing and downloading | You |
| How it gets there | Subscribing on the Workshop page | Copying the mod folder in by hand |
| What to avoid | Copying or moving Workshop folders into the manual location | Assuming a manual copy will update automatically |
| Build match | Must match the build the mod supports | Must match the build the mod supports; the sources do not state a separate layout rule for manual folders |
If a Workshop mod is missing, first confirm the Steam download is complete. Only use the manual folder for mods you installed yourself.

What to gather before asking for help or resetting anything
Resetting a save, reinstalling the game, or clearing folders can remove the evidence needed to diagnose the problem. Before you try any of those, collect the following so the next step is specific:
- The Project Zomboid build you are running and the mod’s stated build compatibility
- The mod’s exact name and Workshop link
- Your platform (Windows, Linux, or Mac)
- Where the mod is missing: the main-menu Mods list, an existing save, a hosted game, or a dedicated server
- Any error text shown in the game or on the server
- Whether the mod worked before a game update
How reliable this guidance is
The build-compatibility and download checks come from the PZ Troubleshooter guide, which is a secondary troubleshooting resource rather than an official statement from The Indie Stone. The page is labelled as last verified on 22 August 2026. The Steam discussions described above are user reports from March 2022 and January 2025, and they predate current builds, so menu names and steps may have changed. The server configuration details come from WinterNode’s provider documentation and apply only to that server setup.
