Then check that the host’s world allows multiplayer, account privacy settings permit it, and your console account has any required online subscription. Investigate router settings only after those checks.
1. Make sure you’re both playing Bedrock
Ordinary cross-platform multiplayer works between Bedrock players. Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer ecosystems, so a Java player cannot join a Bedrock friend through the usual cross-play flow. Check the edition each person is launching before changing account or network settings. Minecraft’s edition guide explains the distinction.

2. Check Microsoft sign-in and friend status
Minecraft’s multiplayer guide says players need to be signed in with a Microsoft account. Use the account associated with Minecraft, verify the other player’s gamertag, and add one another as Minecraft friends. Minecraft’s multiplayer guide covers the account requirement and friend-based play.
Open the Friends tab to see friends who are currently playing. If the host’s world does not appear, ask them to start the world and send you an invitation. Minecraft’s friend-world guidance recommends using the latest game version as well.

3. Check how the world is hosted
A friend’s directly hosted world
The host must be online, have the world open, and have multiplayer enabled for that world. If any of those conditions is missing, the world may not be available to join. Minecraft Help’s multiplayer troubleshooting guidance also identifies host availability and world settings as relevant checks.
A Realm
A Realm works differently: invited guests can play without the owner being online. If you are trying to join a Realm, confirm that you have access to that Realm rather than waiting for its owner to open a personal world. Minecraft Help distinguishes Realm access from a directly hosted world.

4. Review privacy settings and child-account permissions
Account privacy controls can prevent multiplayer access. The Microsoft account used to play must be permitted to join multiplayer games. Restrictions on invitations, clubs, or communication can also make it difficult to find or invite a friend. For a child account, a parent or family account manager may need to change the relevant permissions. Minecraft’s account and multiplayer guidance identifies privacy permissions as a check.
5. Update both players’ games
Install the latest version available for each player’s platform. A version mismatch can interfere with joining, so both players should update before troubleshooting the network. Minecraft’s friend-world guidance recommends using the latest version.

6. Check your console’s online access
Console multiplayer may require an active online-service subscription. Minecraft’s account guidance names Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo subscriptions; check the current requirement for the specific platform and account. This is a console check, not a general requirement to buy a Minecraft Realm.

If the edition, accounts, host settings, privacy permissions, game versions, and console access all check out, then consider network configuration. Minecraft Help flags custom DNS and port configuration as possible sources of conflict. Its troubleshooting page is localized in Portuguese, and it does not establish one universal port recipe or a hardware fix for every platform. Follow instructions for your specific platform and network before changing router settings. Minecraft Help’s troubleshooting page is the relevant reference.

No single cause can be identified without knowing the players’ platforms, accounts, and setup. The checks above narrow down the likely point of failure without assuming that new networking equipment will solve it.
