If your Sim can’t enroll in university, the usual cause is that The Sims 4: Discover University is missing from your game, or the application step hasn’t been completed yet. Enrollment requires the expansion installed on a current version of The Sims 4. With it in place, the Sim applies through the University menu on a mailbox or computer, receives an acceptance letter, and then enrolls in a degree program they qualify for.
Check that Discover University is installed and updated
University enrollment is part of the paid expansion, not the base game. Before troubleshooting anything else, confirm the following:

- The expansion is owned and installed. EA identifies Discover University as the pack that adds enrollment at the University of Britechester and Foxbury Institute. EA lists its release date as November 14, 2019.
- The base game is present. EA’s product information says the expansion requires The Sims 4.
- Game updates are current. EA says the expansion requires game updates, so install any pending patch before concluding that the feature is missing.
- You are checking the library where the expansion is owned. A pack purchased on one platform or account does not appear in another installation.
EA describes the expansion as a digital-content license, so it is tied to the account that bought it rather than to a physical disc or accessory.
How to apply and enroll
The application sequence below comes from an EA Forums response describing the process. It is community-sourced guidance, not an official EA help article, so if your game looks different, follow what is on screen and check EA’s current help pages.

- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
- Go to a mailbox or computer on your Sim’s lot.
- Open the University menu.
- Select Apply to University.
- Wait for the acceptance letter. The forum response says this takes roughly a day. Treat that as an approximate, community-reported timeframe rather than a guaranteed one.
- When the acceptance letter arrives, enroll and choose a degree program your Sim qualifies for.
Applying is the step that most often gets skipped. Searching for an enrollment option before the acceptance letter arrives will not produce one, because enrollment only becomes available after the application is answered.
Housing decides whether the Sim leaves the household
Applying does not by itself move your Sim out of their household. The household split happens when the Sim chooses university housing. At that point the Sim moves out of the existing household and into the dorm. The forum response says the Sim may be able to rejoin the original household at the end of the term, but it presents this as a possibility rather than a guaranteed feature, so do not plan around it without checking in game.

If you want the Sim to keep living at home while studying, avoid choosing university housing. The sources reviewed do not describe a commuter option in detail, so read the enrollment choices on screen before confirming anything.
Campus visits and classes work differently
Most confusion comes from the phrase “go to university,” which can mean several different things in the game. EA lists the University of Britechester, dorms and classes among the expansion’s features. Players are not all getting the same experience from those features, however, and the difference is worth understanding before you start a university-focused save.

Visiting the campus
Community discussions indicate that players can visit campus lots with their Sim. Reaching the campus is the simplest part of university play, and it does not depend on the application or enrollment steps.
Following a Sim into class
Reader reports say classes work as a rabbit hole. The Sim travels to the class building, but the player does not enter with them. This is a community-reported description of gameplay, not a current EA support statement, so treat it as the commonly observed behavior rather than a documented rule. If you expected to control your Sim during lectures, this is the most likely source of disappointment.

If the University option still does not appear
Work through these checks in order. Most missing-option reports trace back to one of them.
- Confirm the expansion is installed and the game is updated. If either is missing, the University menu will not work as described above.
- Use the mailbox or computer route. The application described in the sources starts from the University menu on one of these objects. If you are looking for the option somewhere else, begin there.
- Check whether you are searching for enrollment too early. Enrollment appears only after the acceptance letter arrives. Apply first.
- Check EA’s current help for your platform and game version. The sources reviewed do not include a current, official, all-platform troubleshooting checklist for a missing University interaction. A fix that worked for one player’s save may not apply to yours, so do not assume it does.
Searches such as “my sim cannot enroll into university” usually describe this exact situation, and the checks above cover the cases reported most often.

Choosing between Britechester and Foxbury
EA names two institutions: the University of Britechester and Foxbury Institute. The sources reviewed do not establish a complete, current mapping of which degree is best suited to which institution, so avoid relying on any ranking that claims to settle the question. The practical approach is to compare the degree choices and the living arrangement each institution offers in your own game, then choose the one that fits the Sim’s career goals and your preferred housing setup.
What is confirmed and what is not
EA’s product information covers the expansion’s name, release date, base-game and update requirements, and the listed features. The application steps come from an EA Forums response. Campus visits and class behavior come from reader discussions, so they carry less weight than EA’s own statements.
EA also published a trial page in 2022. Its trial dates are internally inconsistent, so it does not show whether a trial is available today. If you are looking for a trial, check EA’s current listing directly.
