In 2015, Wizards of the Coast and AltspaceVR announced a licensed way to play Dungeons & Dragons in a social virtual-reality setting. It was tabletop role-playing around a virtual table—not a conventional D&D video game. The reports describe what the experience was intended to offer then; they do not establish that it is available today.
What the AltspaceVR D&D experience was
The announcement brought licensed D&D elements into AltspaceVR, a social virtual environment. Players could meet as avatars in a tavern-style room and gather around a virtual tabletop, using digital character sheets and dice. The setting was designed to make a remote session feel like a shared tabletop gathering, rather than to turn D&D into a standalone video game. Tom’s Hardware’s 2015 report and TechSpot’s coverage describe the setup.
Tabletop tools in a virtual room
Reports described class and monster figurines, along with terrain for dungeons, wilderness and city environments. TechSpot also reported virtual tomes that could show character information and provide access to web resources for looking up rules. These details positioned the environment as a place to run a tabletop session with digital props, not as a game that played itself.
A social experience, not a promise about in-person play
The appeal presented in the 2015 coverage was that friends could meet remotely while retaining some of the social rituals of tabletop play. That was the intended experience, not evidence that VR objectively duplicates sitting together in person.

Did players need a VR headset?
Tom’s Hardware said AltspaceVR was primarily designed for headset use, naming the Oculus Rift DK2 and HTC Vive, while also noting that people could access it without a headset. The report suggested a headset for the fuller virtual experience. Those models are historical examples from 2015, not current compatibility advice.
What the six-hour claim actually means
TechSpot attributed this comment to AltspaceVR founder and CEO Eric Romo: “D&D is extremely social, which is why we are so excited to offer it in AltspaceVR. Players love it! We’ve seen them hang out together for sessions lasting six hours—previously only developers spent that long in VR.” This is a company representative’s anecdotal account reported at the time, not a formal study or a statistic about D&D or VR players generally.

Can you play this D&D VR experience now?
The 2015 reports establish that the partnership and experience were announced, but they do not verify whether the licensed AltspaceVR setting remains available. They also do not identify a current VR service that replaced it, so the announcement should not be treated as a way to choose or buy a headset today.
D&D Beyond describes Maps as its official virtual tabletop integrated with D&D Beyond. That establishes its tabletop role, but not that Maps is a VR product or a successor to the AltspaceVR environment.
