What Game Pass Ultimate costs now
Xbox’s April 21, 2026 announcement says: “Starting today, Game Pass Ultimate drops from $29.99 to $22.99 a month.” The announcement describes the price change and cautions that regional prices may differ. See Xbox’s price update for the official terms.

That makes $22.99 the announced U.S. monthly price—not $20. A claim that someone can get Ultimate for exactly $20 a month would need a separate, current offer and proof that the buyer qualifies. The available official pricing information does not establish such an offer.
What a gift card does—and does not do
A Microsoft or Xbox gift card is a way to add money to a Microsoft account. Microsoft says account balance can be used to purchase an Xbox-related subscription, subject to applicable terms. It is a payment source, not a subscription discount or price guarantee.

Keep these amounts distinct when assessing a deal:
- Subscription price: the amount Xbox charges for Ultimate under the price and billing terms shown for your account.
- Gift-card face value: the amount added to your account when the card is redeemed.
- Card purchase price: what you paid a retailer for the card. A discount on the card, if one is actually offered, does not change Xbox’s listed subscription price.
- Your net cost: what you ultimately spend after any eligible promotion or card discount. That is not the same as a guaranteed $20 monthly subscription rate.
Microsoft’s instructions for adding money to a Microsoft account explain account balance use. The balance is applied under the current purchase terms and prices; buying a card does not preserve the former price.
Check region and payment eligibility before redeeming
Gift cards are not universally interchangeable across countries. Microsoft’s gift-card terms say a card denomination in a currency may be added only to an account registered in a jurisdiction that recognizes that currency, and that funds may be used only at participating stores available in that jurisdiction. Check that the card’s currency and region match your Microsoft account before buying or redeeming it.

For an eligible card and account, the general sequence is:
- Redeem the Microsoft or Xbox gift card to add its value to the Microsoft account used for Xbox purchases.
- Open the Game Pass purchase or subscription flow while signed in to that account and review the displayed price and payment details.
- Confirm the purchase only after checking how the account balance and any other payment method will be used, including any renewal terms shown.
Payment handling can depend on the account and subscription state. Microsoft’s subscription payment options guidance describes specific cases, including one in which a user should wait for an old subscription to expire before redeeming a gift card or code. Do not assume every active subscription, region, or checkout flow works the same way; follow the instructions shown for your account.

What the latest price update says is included
In its April 21, 2026 announcement, Xbox said Ultimate continues to include hundreds of games on Xbox console and PC, in-game benefits, online console multiplayer, unlimited Xbox Cloud Gaming, and major day-one releases. Xbox also said future Call of Duty games beginning in 2026 would no longer join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch, but would be expected around the following holiday season; existing Call of Duty games in the library remain available. These details are from that dated announcement and may change with later plan updates.
