Baldur’s Gate 3 has an official in-game Mod Manager for installing supported mods, plus a separate Windows PC Toolkit for creating them. Larian introduced the official system with Patch 7. You can browse and update supported mods in the game; creating mods requires the Toolkit, available free through Steam, and both a mod.io and Larian account.
Use mods or create them: two different workflows
Install supported mods in the game
The in-game Mod Manager is for browsing and installing mods made with Larian’s Toolkit and published to the supported library. In the manager’s Installed tab, check for an Update button to update a mod. See Larian’s Official Mod Support FAQ and mod support information.

Create mods with the Toolkit
The Toolkit is a separate Windows PC application, downloaded free through Steam. You need mod.io and Larian accounts to set it up. Larian’s June 2024 announcement described creator tools for adding weapons and armor, making classes and subclasses, designing spells, customizing dice skins, and sharing mods. Creators can submit through the editor for moderation and possible inclusion in the in-game browser, or package projects for third-party sites. See Larian’s Community Update 28.
Toolkit requirements and first setup
Larian’s current support FAQ lists these requirements and recommendations for the Toolkit. The hardware figures are recommendations, not a guarantee that a lower-spec PC will fail.

Install Baldur’s Gate 3 and the Toolkit before starting. Larian’s beginner modding guide describes the initial setup:
- Launch the Toolkit. On first launch, provide the game’s Data folder path. The guide lists default Steam and GOG paths.
- In the editor, choose New Project or Create, name your mod, then select Create.
- If you plan to import assets, set the Source Asset Data Path to a folder ending in
Data. Update this path when you switch projects.
The guide distinguishes project, editor, mod, and public data folders; they do not all contribute the same files to the packaged mod. Check the guide when deciding where to put assets or project files.
Where official mods work—and what the Toolkit does not support
The Toolkit itself is not available on console or Mac, according to Larian’s support FAQ. That does not mean players on those platforms have no access to mods: Larian’s June 2024 announcement described phased support for supported mods on PC, console, and Mac. Availability depends on the supported library and platform curation. Larian said PC submissions receive stability and terms checks, while console availability adds a cross-platform curation step; a PC mod is not automatically available on console.
Larian also says it will not prevent third-party modding. The distinction is support: only mods distributed through the official mod.io pipeline receive official support. Larian’s modding guidelines and FAQ describe the official rules, and its announcement notes that third-party modding can support more script-focused work outside the official pipeline. The official route offers a supported discovery and moderation path, but does not guarantee universal platform reach or compatibility.

Compatibility, updates, and multiplayer
Keep mods updated, but expect occasional conflicts
Official support does not guarantee that a mod will remain compatible with every game update or work alongside every other mod. Larian identifies save-loading failures, startup crashes, UI problems, and visual issues as possible mod-related symptoms. Check the Installed tab for an Update button. If a problem persists, disable mods to see whether it continues; the support FAQ covers troubleshooting and mod dependencies or conflicts.
Match the whole party’s mod setup
For multiplayer, every player needs the exact same mods and versions. Have each player check the Installed tab for available updates before trying to load a modded save. Larian specifically identifies mismatched mod setups as a cause of multiplayer loading problems in its mod support FAQ.

Respect creators’ work when publishing
Larian’s official terms require mods to be original work or include content used with permission. Publishing through the Modding Library invokes the stated Larian license and mod.io terms. Do not port or recreate another creator’s work without permission; Larian’s Hotfix 26 announcement explicitly says that is not permitted.
