Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection is a 2017 zoo-management game that expands the 2013 Xbox-era Zoo Tycoon line with more animals, more campaigns, and more control over building. Critics have been divided. The Xbox One page on Metacritic, as checked in 2026, shows a Metascore of 70 from six displayed reviews, which it labels “Mixed or Average.” Praise for the animal presentation sits alongside complaints about controls and interface. This article explains what the game contains, what critics said, and how the platform and version picture looks today.
What the game is
Ultimate Animal Collection is built around three things: constructing a zoo, caring for the animals inside it, and working through progression in campaign, challenge, sandbox, and multiplayer modes. Microsoft presented it as an expanded version of the earlier Zoo Tycoon release rather than a sequel, with more detailed environments, more construction control, and animals from Australia and South America.
The game released on October 31, 2017. Microsoft Studios announced a US launch price of $29.99 at the time. That figure is historical and should not be read as the current price on any storefront.

The sandbox limitation matters if you expect the same management pressure in every mode. Campaigns and challenges carry the economic and goal-based play, while sandbox is the place for building without that layer.
Animals and what Microsoft changed
The new species list draws heavily on the Australian and South American campaigns. Microsoft’s Q&A names jaguars, tapirs, and anteaters from South America, and kangaroos, koalas, and platypuses from Australia. The animal roster is the most visible part of the expansion, and it is the part reviewers most often mention favorably.

The quote identifies three changes: larger zoos, finer control over paths, and more enclosure customization. Those are the claims to test against the critic reactions below.
Multiplayer
Microsoft describes four-person multiplayer over Xbox Live, with players able to create and manage zoos together, trade animals, and communicate through ZooNews. This is the publisher’s feature description from 2017. The current state of matchmaking, online player population, and service availability has not been verified for this article.

Critic reception
The main aggregate is Metacritic’s Xbox One critic page. As checked in 2026, it shows a Metascore of 70 from six displayed reviews, with individual scores ranging from 55 to 80, and labels the result “Mixed or Average.” That is a small sample from one platform. It describes how the Xbox One reviews landed, not a universal verdict on the game across every platform.
Within those reviews, two themes recur:
- Praise: the visual presentation of the animals and the breadth of content.
- Reservations: concerns about controls and interface, particularly around building.
These are individual reviewers’ assessments. This article did not play the game and does not offer firsthand findings on controls, frame rate, or interface behavior.

The listing also includes online co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, cloud saves, and Xbox Play Anywhere. It states that cloud play is included with Xbox Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. Microsoft’s 2017 Q&A described Xbox Play Anywhere sharing saves, add-ons, and achievements between compatible Windows 10 PCs and Xbox One. Because store listings change, confirm the current platform list and Game Pass status on the Xbox Store before you buy.

The expansion’s clearest appeal is to players who already know the earlier Xbox game and want more animals, more regions, and larger zoos without starting from scratch. A common player question compares this edition with the original Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection on PC. One Reddit post raises that comparison, but a single post does not show how common the question is, so treat it as a useful framing rather than a measured trend.
Players who care most about precise building and smooth control should weigh the critics’ interface concerns more heavily than the aggregate score. Players who mainly want the animal roster and the breadth of modes will find the content list the strongest part of the case for the game.
