In Hytale, a zone is a broad region of the world with its own world-generation rules and its own set of biomes. A biome is a specific environment inside a zone or the wider world, defined by its terrain, surface materials, weather, plants, creatures and underground features. Before relying on any example, check the generator: as of October 2026, official Hytale posts say Early Access Exploration uses World-Gen V1, while the successor generator, V2, is still in development for the Orbis world. Official material describes the zone-and-biome model in general terms, but it does not publish a complete, current list of playable zones and biomes.
How zones and biomes relate
The January 2019 worldgen introduction, which its own page now marks as outdated, set out the core model: the world is divided into zones, and each zone has its own generation rules and biome set. The two terms operate at different scales.
| Aspect | Zone | Biome |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Broad region of the world | One environment inside a zone or the world |
| What it sets | Its own generation rules and a set of biomes | Terrain shape, surface materials, props and points of interest |
| Example from the 2019 post | Zone 1 combines forests, lakes, hills and ravines | Individual environments such as shorelines and deep ocean, which the post and later official material name as examples |
| Status of the example | Historical design illustration | Historical or in-progress illustration, not a confirmed current build list |
The 2019 post also contrasted underground caves in Borea and Emerald Grove, showing that zones carry distinct blocks and content such as plants, weather, geology, creatures and underground features. Treat these as illustrations of the original design, not a current atlas. (Hytale, “Worldgen Introduction,” January 4, 2019.)
Which generator runs what, as of October 2026
Most confusion about zones and biomes comes from mixing sources written for different generators and dates. The table below separates them.

| World-Gen V1 | Generator used for Early Access Exploration. The January 2026 post said Exploration would launch on V1 because substantial biome content was ready. | Hytale, “Community Spotlight: WorldGen V2,” July 29, 2026; “The Future of World Generation,” January 5, 2026 |
| World-Gen V2 | In active development and intended to support Orbis. Hytale says it will replace V1 when ready. This guide gives no date for that handover, and the handover is not complete. | “The Future of World Generation,” January 5, 2026; “Community Spotlight: WorldGen V2,” July 29, 2026 |

How zones and biomes are generated
World-Gen V1: noise, thresholds and layers
The June 2020 technical article explains how V1 shapes landscapes. Treat it as a dated description of the system, not a guarantee that each step works the same way in V2.
- Noisemaps generate continuous values across the world.
- Thresholds turn those values into distinct landscape regions.
- Layers add the surface and subsurface materials for each region.
- Ground cover is placed on top of the layers.
- Incidental prefabs (small pre-built structures) are placed.
- Larger points of interest are placed last.
The article describes these as procedural systems with room for modder customization. (Hytale, “A closer look at landscape generation in Hytale,” June 29, 2020.)
World-Gen V2: the visual node editor
The January 2026 post describes V2 as more accessible to creators through a visual node editor. According to that post, creators can:
Rank #2
- Join Forces with Your Favorite Characters From the Film-Play as one of the classic childhood legends including: North, Tooth, Bunnymund, Sandman, and Jack Frost
- Battle Pitch in an Epic Adventure-Take on Pitch and his evil nightmares in a deep and intuitive adventure combat game
- Unique Abilities and Upgrades-Unlock power-ups such as weapon upgrades for your character
- Explore Legendary Guardian Realms-Experience the imaginative worlds from Rise of the Guardians
- Team up in Multiplayer-Swap between any of the Guardians in drop-in-and-out four-player squad based multiplayer on consoles
- Shape individual biomes, including terrain shape and transitions.
- Blend terrain between biome edges.
- Set materials with material-provider logic.
- Place props such as vegetation and points of interest.
The post also says the biome and zone assets used for Orbis are intended to be shared with the community. Because V2 is still in development, these are stated plans, not features every player can use now.
Design intent
The January 2026 post quotes Simon: “Hytale’s vision is to feel carefully handcrafted while remaining infinitely procedural, with design always serving gameplay first!” It is a statement of design intent, not a measurable guarantee, and it does not show that any particular biome is finished.

What the official record does not establish
- No complete current catalogue. Official posts do not provide an exhaustive, current list of zones and biomes. Fan-maintained lists are not official.
- Dated technical detail. The 2020 landscape article describes V1 systems. Do not assume every implementation detail carries into V2.
- Old statistics. The 2019 post’s figure of 3,785 prefabs was a development snapshot from that time. It is not a current count of zone or biome content.
Comparing two zones or biomes
To compare two environments in a way that stays accurate across versions, use these five axes:
- Terrain and surface features.
- Climate, weather and materials.
- Flora, creatures and other zone-specific content.
- Underground geography and exploration.
- Development status: current V1, V2 work in progress, or historical preview.
The first four follow the original zone description. The fifth matters most, because an environment described in a 2019 post or a 2026 pre-release note may not exist in the build you play.

What happens to existing worlds
The July 2026 community post says V1 worlds will remain playable after V1 stops generating new chunks. It also warns that some items may not transfer between V1 and V2 worlds. The post should be checked for specifics before you plan around any particular item.
