Critics have landed mostly in the middle on Zoeti. Metacritic’s PC critic roundup shows a 69 Metascore from five reviews: one positive, four mixed, and none negative. Reviewers consistently single out the poker-hand combat idea and the 2D art, and they repeatedly raise steep difficulty, bugs, and presentation problems. This article synthesizes that published critic coverage. We did not play the game to write it.
What Zoeti asks you to do
Zoeti is a single-player, turn-based roguelite developed by Dusklight CO., LTD. and published by Akupara Games. Steam lists its release date as April 20, 2023. The publisher’s store description frames it this way:
“Zoeti is a turn-based roguelite that features a deck of playing cards used to create card combos and activate skills in the heat of battle.”
The core loop works like this:
- Form a poker hand. Combinations such as pairs, full houses and straight flushes are the input for combat.
- Trigger skills. The hand you form activates attacks, defense and other skills.
- Develop the run. Skill upgrades and route choices shape how each run unfolds from one battle to the next.
The Steam feature page also advertises three characters, three game modes, five difficulty levels and 30 achievements. These are publisher-listed features, not findings from independent testing, and the critic sample below does not verify them.

What the five critics said
Metacritic’s PC roundup attaches five reviews to the game. Their summaries are paraphrased below, and each row shows only what that outlet’s summary emphasizes.
| Outlet | Date | What the summary emphasizes |
|---|---|---|
| GameSpew | April 25, 2023 | Praises the hand-based twist, 2D animation and soundtrack; says further polish could help. |
| Hey Poor Player | April 19, 2023 | Calls the challenge steep; flags balance concerns and minor glitches. |
| Worth Playing | April 21, 2023 | Describes an appealing concept and charming art; cites bugs and a lackluster presentation. |
| GameGrin | May 1, 2023 | Notes that music can become repetitive and that character images are recycled. |
| Movies Games and Tech | April 21, 2023 | Calls the core idea promising but says it is weighed down by frustrations. |
The roundup does not display each review’s individual rating class, so this article does not assign a positive or mixed label to any named outlet. The summaries do not name individual authors either, and no author should be credited for these excerpts without checking the original review.
The strongest single line of praise comes from GameSpew, which Metacritic quotes as: “Despite its niggles, there’s a lot to like about Zoeti: its poker hand twist on typical card-based battler gameplay makes it stand out from the crowd.”

All five reviews date from April and May 2023, around launch. The sample therefore reflects launch-window coverage and does not describe how the game has changed since.

Four themes recur across the summaries. They are tensions rather than settled verdicts, because five reviews is a small sample.
Is the poker-hand input more engaging than a standard deck-builder?
This is the point critics return to most often. The hand you assemble from playing cards decides which skill fires, so card selection becomes a combination puzzle rather than a simple choice of one card at a time. GameSpew and Movies Games and Tech both treat that idea as the reason the game stands out, and Movies Games and Tech describes it as promising.

- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
The reader question “is Zoeti more poker or deck-building?” is best answered by where the decisions happen. Forming the hand is the moment-to-moment input. The surrounding run, with its upgrades and route choices, is the part that resembles deck-building. The critic sample does not weigh one against the other numerically.
Does the difficulty feel fair?
Hey Poor Player is the only summary in the sample that calls the challenge steep and points to balance concerns. The publisher lists five difficulty levels, but the reviews in this sample do not report how those levels change the balance problems critics describe. Readers who find the early game punishing should expect the difficulty complaint to be a real theme, not a single outlier, while recognizing that it comes from one summary.
Can the art and soundtrack offset repetition?
The 2D presentation is the most consistently praised element. GameSpew highlights its animation and soundtrack, and Worth Playing calls the art charming. GameGrin pushes the other way, noting music that can become repetitive and character images that are recycled. The sample suggests that many critics find the visuals appealing, while a smaller number find that the audio and character art wear thin over a long session.

Do bugs and polish problems break the game?
Critics describe these issues as real but not as wrecking the concept. Hey Poor Player reports minor glitches, Worth Playing cites bugs, and GameSpew says further polish could help. None of the five summaries quantifies how often bugs occur or whether they block progress, so the honest reading is that rough edges affect enjoyment without being shown to stop play.
How Steam users rated it
When we accessed the Steam store page in 2026, its summary read “Mostly Positive (81)”, with 76% of those 81 user reviews positive. This is a user snapshot, not critic opinion, and it changes as reviews are added. Treat it as dated information rather than a permanent rating.

Who this game suits
Based on the critic sample, Zoeti is likely to appeal to you if:
- You enjoy card-combination battlers and roguelite runs where each run changes your options.
- The poker-hand mechanic is the reason you are interested, and you want to build strategy around it.
- You accept uneven polish and a steep difficulty curve in exchange for a distinctive combat idea.
It is less likely to suit you if:
- You want a polished, bug-light experience, since several critics described glitches and presentation issues.
- Repetitive music or recycled character art would weigh on a long session.
- You plan to play on Switch or iOS, where you should first confirm the version and its availability on that storefront.
About this synthesis
This article draws on two published sources: the Metacritic PC critic roundup, which shows the five reviews and the 69 Metascore, and the Steam product listing for the game’s release date, features, requirements, price and user summary. The Metascore and review excerpts were checked in 2026, and the critic reviews themselves date from 2023. Metacritic’s summaries are paraphrases, so readers who want the full argument should open each original review. Because the critic sample is small, treat its tensions as signals about where the game divides opinion rather than as a complete survey of professional opinion.
