GJID is a Sokoban-style crate-pushing puzzle. You guide a robot through a maze, push crates into recycling bins, and use an exit door to reach the next level. It is best known today as a Linux clone of a 1992 DOS shareware game, and the clone is distributed as source code through SourceForge rather than as a packaged commercial release.
How GJID plays
The core rule is simple: the robot can push crates, but it cannot pull them. Only one crate moves per push, so every move can lock a crate into a position you cannot undo. Planning the order of pushes matters more than speed.
- Goal: push every crate into a recycling bin on the level.
- Movement: crates move only when pushed, one at a time, and cannot be dragged back.
- One-way doors: these can complicate routes. A door you pass through may not let you return, so check the surrounding layout before committing a crate or the robot to a corridor.
- Completion: the level is finished when its crates are recycled. The exit door then becomes the way forward.
The project page states the completion rule directly:
“When you have recycled all the crates on the level you should use the exit door to move on to the next.” — GJID project page

Levels and solving approach
The Linux clone’s project page says the game contains 14 levels. That page does not give a publication date for the count, so treat it as the level total for the version it describes rather than a dated fact about every release.
The game does not document its level solutions in the sources reviewed, so the approach below is general Sokoban practice rather than GJID-specific guidance:
Rank #2
- DOS Second Edition card game updates the cards and rules to deal out the action on game night and a storage tin to take it on the go!
- In the race to get rid of their cards, players can discard into either of TWO Discard Piles -or even both!
- All "2" number cards are "Wild DOS" cards and can be played as any color "2" the player wants.
- The "Wild Play Two Card" forces the next player to discard at least 2 cards on their turn, and if they can't, they must draw 2 cards.
- If a player plays 2 Action Cards on the same turn, the next player must take BOTH actions!
- Push crates away from walls and corners, where a crate can become permanently stuck.
- Work backward from the recycling bins: decide which bin each crate goes to before moving the first one.
- Clear crates that sit in the robot’s path first, because a blocked corridor can make later pushes impossible.
- Before entering a one-way door, confirm that you have finished everything on the far side or that you can afford to be cut off from the rest of the level.
The Linux clone (GJID 3.3)
The project maintainer describes GJID as a clone of the DOS shareware game of the same name, written in 1992 by John Remyn. The SourceForge project listing classifies it as a Linux game with an X11 interface and shows version 3.3 as last updated on 3 November 2024. That date is the listing’s release information. It does not confirm that the package builds or runs on every current Linux distribution.
How to get the source and build it
- Open the GJID project page and read the source-download and build information there. The build steps themselves are maintained on that page, so follow them rather than a copy.
- Download the source archive from the SourceForge listing for gjid-3.3.tar.gz.
- Extract the archive and follow the build instructions from the project page. If a step fails, check the project page for any stated requirements before changing system packages.
Before you install
- You need a desktop session that provides X11, because the clone’s interface is built on it.
- The most recent listed release is version 3.3, dated 3 November 2024.
- Build compatibility with your specific distribution and its current libraries is not established by the sources; expect to troubleshoot a build on a recent system.
Notes for developers
The project author also presents GJID as an example of building X applications with XCB, including drawing into a 320×240 backbuffer and scaling it. This is useful as a reference for XCB drawing code. The sources do not provide performance measurements, so it should not be read as evidence about speed on modern hardware.

- DOS Second Edition card game deals out twice the action on game night and more than double the fun!
- In the race to get rid of their cards, players can discard into either of 2 discard piles -or even both!
- All Number 2 cards are Wild DOS cards and can be played as any color 2 card the player wants!
- The Wild Play Two Card forces the next player to discard at least 2 cards on their turn, and if they can't, they must draw 2 cards!
- If a player plays 2 Action Cards on the same turn, the next player must take BOTH actions!
The original DOS game and its history
The original was written in 1992 by John Remyn. DOSGames.com lists it as a single-player shareware game and offers it for browser play through its DOS emulation page. That browser version is the archived original, not the Linux clone, and it runs in an emulator rather than natively on Linux.
Shareware terms are historical. The archive’s references to shareware and registration describe how the game was once distributed. They are not current purchase instructions, and the sources do not establish present-day licensing or registration terms for the original. The clone’s project page also notes that the original author’s contact details had become invalid and that attempts to reach the author had failed, so the current status of the original cannot be confirmed with its author.
