Then check the game’s voice and mute controls, the platform’s chat route and microphone settings, and—only for cross-platform problems—crossplay settings. The steps differ on PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC, and MWII’s exact in-game labels can vary by version.
First, narrow down what is failing
Run a brief test with one person you know is in the same party or match. Confirm that neither of you has muted the other, then identify which symptom fits:
- You hear them, but they can’t hear you: focus on your microphone, input device, and microphone permissions.
- You can’t hear anyone in game chat: check your output device, chat volume, mute controls, and whether you are listening to party chat instead.
- Party chat works but game chat does not: switch the active chat route and check the game’s voice channel or audience.
- It fails only with players on another platform: check crossplay and whether the problem is limited to cross-platform communication.
- It fails with everyone, despite working device input: check the current MWII service information and account notifications before changing network settings or reinstalling.
This test is a way to isolate the failure, not proof of a particular cause.
Check MWII voice, audience, and mute settings
Open MWII’s audio or voice settings and look for voice-chat enablement, voice volume, the selected channel or audience, and controls for muting individual players or the lobby. Check both the lobby and match interface; a mute can apply to a person or group rather than disable your microphone globally.

Activision’s current guide for Call of Duty: Warzone describes voice enablement, audience choices such as All Lobby, Party Only, and Friends Only, and individual or lobby mute controls under Settings > Audio > Voice Chat. That guide is for Warzone, not MWII, so treat it as a Call of Duty reference rather than a verified MWII menu path; use the labels shown in your MWII build. Activision’s Warzone communication guide also notes that platform account settings can override in-game settings.
Switch between party chat and game chat
Party chat and in-game chat are separate routes. If you can talk in a console party but not to teammates in MWII, switch to game chat using your console’s interface, then test again. If the game is set to a party-only or friends-only audience, changing the console route alone may not be enough.
PS5
Press the PS button to open the control center and use the Game Base voice-chat controls to select or prioritize game chat instead of party chat. PlayStation’s guide explains this route and the related PS4 controls: PlayStation voice-chat troubleshooting.
PS4
Open Party Settings and check Chat Audio so the selected route is game chat when you want to speak with the game lobby or team. The available controls may differ from PS5’s control center.

Check microphone and speaker routing on PlayStation
PS5
- Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm the intended output device is selected.
- Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone, select the input device you are actually using, and check its microphone level.
- Return to the voice-chat test and confirm the mic is not muted on the controller, headset, or console interface.
PS4
- Go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices and select the intended input and output devices.
- Check the microphone’s input level. PlayStation says the Input Volume bar should respond when the microphone is working.
- If the bar does not move, reconnect the device and test another headset or controller if available. If another device registers input, the original headset, microphone, connection, or controller is a more likely place to investigate.
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance covers controller microphones, headsets, USB microphones, and these device tests. Consider a platform-compatible gaming headset with a microphone only if the device-level test points to an input problem; buying one will not fix a muted lobby, wrong chat route, or account restriction. See Sony’s voice-chat troubleshooting steps.
Allow microphone access on Windows
If teammates cannot hear you on PC, Windows privacy controls may block microphone input even when MWII’s voice settings are enabled. In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on microphone access and app access, and enable desktop-app access where applicable. Then confirm MWII is using the intended input device in the game and your Windows sound settings.
Microsoft provides the corresponding privacy controls for Windows 10 as well. Its support page notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; this does not change the steps for checking a PC that still runs it. Microsoft’s microphone permission instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check crossplay only if the problem is cross-platform
If chat works with players on your platform but not with friends on another platform, check whether crossplay is enabled and whether the affected players can join the same game context. Activision documents the MWII PlayStation crossplay setting under Settings > Account & Network and the Xbox control in console privacy and online-safety settings. These settings affect crossplay availability; Activision does not present them as a general voice-chat repair. Ground War requires crossplay, so changing it can also affect access to that mode.

Check for a service issue or account restriction
Activision’s MWII Known Issues page, dated February 27, 2026, does not list a voice-chat problem among its tracked issues. That dated list is not proof that no current or unlisted problem exists; Activision asks players to report issues that are absent from it. Check the MWII Known Issues page and use its reporting route if your issue is not listed.
If your microphone registers input locally and the game still cannot communicate, check for an account notification and contact Activision Support. Activision has said its MWII moderation system can globally mute a player verified to have engaged in offensive voice chat. That policy does not establish that any particular player has been muted; do not assume an account restriction without account-specific evidence. Activision’s MWII in-game reporting announcement.
