Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, and Roblox were YouTube’s top three games associated with speedrun-related views, according to a platform article published in September 2022. That is the clearest YouTube-published game list available for this topic—but it reflects speedrun videos, not every game trending across YouTube in 2022. A separate children-focused study measured searches in YouTube’s Games category and found a different mix.
Which games led YouTube’s speedrun-related views?
YouTube’s September 12, 2022 article, “Speeding to the finish”, names Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, and Roblox as the top three games associated with its speedrun-related view analysis. The article reports that videos related to speedruns received more than 7 billion views in 2021. That figure is for 2021, as reported in 2022; it is not a count of 2022 views.

YouTube describes a speedrun as an attempt to complete a challenge or an entire game as quickly as possible. Its analysis is about that kind of video, not a universal ranking of game popularity. YouTube also notes country-level variation, citing Sonic and Sonic 2 in Brazil as examples, so the global-seeming list should not be treated as a ranking for every country.
What a separate YouTube search study found
Kaspersky’s 2022 article, “Kids on the web in 2022”, reports relative shares of YouTube searches in the Games category among a children-focused research population. It describes Minecraft as the most popular game in that dataset and gives these figures:

These percentages are search shares in Kaspersky’s dataset, not video-view shares or an all-audience YouTube leaderboard. The source’s sequence is internally inconsistent: it places Five Nights at Freddy’s at 7.15% after Brawl Stars at 5.32%, while Friday Night Funkin’ is also listed at 7.15%. The figures therefore do not support treating the full sequence as a precise ranking.
Why speedruns and Shorts can make a game trend
Speedruns create repeatable challenges
A game can attract an audience through more than ordinary playthroughs. Speedrun videos focus attention on a specific challenge, the strategies used to meet it, and attempts to improve a time. YouTube’s article describes gameplay recordings as evidence for runs, while analysis and commentary explain how records are broken. That combination gives viewers a reason to watch a game’s community as well as the game itself.

Shorts can renew interest in familiar games
YouTube’s December 1, 2022 US year-end article, “A year on YouTube: 2022’s top trending videos & creators in the US”, ranks videos, Shorts, creators, and songs—not games. It notes that breakout creators were finding niches in Shorts and putting fresh spins on Minecraft trends. This is evidence of Minecraft’s presence in creator content, but it does not establish a ranked list of trending games.

- Views versus searches: YouTube’s top-three list concerns speedrun-related views; Kaspersky’s percentages concern searches in the Games category.
- Different audiences and scope: Kaspersky’s figures come from children-focused research. They should not be merged with YouTube’s speedrun analysis or generalized to all viewers.
- Different timeframes: YouTube reported a 2021 speedrun-related view count in a September 2022 article; Kaspersky’s article concerns 2022 online activity.
- Regional differences matter: YouTube explicitly notes country-level variation in speedrun interests.
YouTube’s broader 2022 Culture & Trends report also found that 65% of surveyed Gen Z respondents aged 18–24 across more than 10 countries agreed that personally relevant content mattered more than content lots of other people talked about. That is general platform context, not a gaming-specific finding, and it does not change what either game dataset measures.
