Rocket League documents how its friend list and cross-platform requests work, but there is no confirmed universal fix for an online-presence mismatch.
Check whether the friend is actually missing
Rocket League separates people into Friends List views. A friend may not appear in the view you are currently checking, so inspect the available categories before assuming the person is offline or absent.

- Party
- Online
- Offline
- Hidden

Check whether Epic is reporting a service problem
Visit the Epic Games status page and check Rocket League Parties, Friends, and Messaging, Game Services, and Epic Online Services Friends and Presence. Status changes over time, so use the page’s current state rather than relying on an earlier snapshot. When these components are operational, that does not rule out a localized problem or a newly emerging issue.

Confirm the cross-platform setting
If you and your friend play on different platforms, check Settings > Gameplay > Cross-Platform Play. Rocket League supports cross-platform play across Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, and Epic says cross-play is enabled by default. This is a relevant setting to verify, not a guaranteed repair for every offline-presence problem. See Epic’s cross-platform play guide.
Confirm that you are Epic friends
For cross-platform friend requests, Rocket League’s documented workflow is to add the person as an Epic Friend using their Epic ID, then accept pending requests in Notifications. For platform friends, the game also offers Settings > Interface > Convert Platform Friends. Parental controls may require a parent or guardian PIN to make changes. Follow the official friend-list instructions if the menus or request state are unclear.

Epic Friends replaced RocketID as Rocket League’s solution for cross-platform friends, as stated in the September Update patch notes.
Try low-risk client-side steps
Restart Rocket League
Close and reopen the game, then check the Friends List again. A player reported that restarting helped with this symptom, but that report is anecdotal and does not establish a universal fix. The report is in a recent Reddit discussion.

Verify game files on Epic Games Launcher for PC
If you play on PC through Epic Games Launcher and restarting does not help, one commenter in the same discussion said verifying game files resolved their issue. In the launcher, open Rocket League’s three-dot menu and choose the verification option. This is a user-reported suggestion, not an official diagnosis or guaranteed solution.
Consider the Club invite workaround
A commenter in a recent Reddit discussion reported being able to invite a friend through a shared Club’s member list. This may not apply to everyone and is not a confirmed fix.

If the mismatch continues
Available official documentation explains friend-list categories, cross-play, and friend requests, but it does not identify one cause or a guaranteed repair for friends showing offline when they are online elsewhere. Player reports describe the same symptom, and suggestions such as re-adding a friend or using Recent Players have had mixed results. Treat those as optional anecdotes, not established solutions; older reports appear in this Reddit thread.
