If Metro 2033’s dialogue or gunfire disappears, cuts out, or only gets faint when you turn toward or away from a character, start with three checks in this order: the game’s own sound volume, the Windows per-app mixer and output device, and the speaker layout Windows is set to use. Most reports of this symptom concern PC, and the fixes that work are configuration fixes, not hardware purchases. No single setting is confirmed to work for everyone.
Before you start, note which version you are running. The original 2010 Metro 2033 and Metro 2033 Redux (developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver) are separate releases, and the public reports about directional audio mostly come from Redux on PC. The sources reviewed for this guide do not establish whether the same behavior occurs on consoles, so the steps below assume a Windows PC.

Identify which symptom you have
The fix depends on the pattern, so match your problem to one of these before changing anything.
| What you hear | Most likely area | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| No game audio at all, but Windows sounds and other apps work | Game volume, app routing, or a game-level audio fault | Steps 1 and 2 below, then the total-silence section |
| Dialogue or gunfire is missing while music or other effects play | Game volume settings or speaker configuration | Step 1, then Step 3 |
| Sound becomes faint or disappears when you look toward or away from a character | Channel layout or directional-audio mismatch | Step 3, then the directional section |
| Sound is missing in every app on the PC | System-wide audio problem, not this game | Check Windows audio output and drivers before touching Metro |
Step 1: Check the game’s sound menu
The original Metro 2033 manual states, “Access the Sound menu to adjust in-game volumes.” The manual describes master and music volume controls there. It does not describe separate dialogue or effects sliders, so do not assume your copy has them. Raise the master volume, confirm music is not muted, and then test a dialogue line or a weapon fire in a quiet area. If your version offers separate sliders, set voice and effects to a non-zero level as well.

- Explore the desolate city-surface, trusting your gas mask and rifle to protect you from a poisoned world and the creatures that roam there.
- Steel your nerve and prepare to face the terrors that await.
Step 2: Check the Windows app mixer and output device
Microsoft’s support guidance says that when system sounds play but audio fails in some apps, app-specific volume settings, per-app output device selection, audio services, or audio drivers may be the cause. Check these in order:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and choose Open Volume mixer. On Windows 11 you can also go to Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Menu names differ slightly between Windows 10 and 11, so use whichever path your version shows.
- Find Metro 2033 (or the Redux executable) in the app list. Confirm its slider is not at zero and the speaker icon beneath it is not muted.
- Still in Settings > System > Sound, confirm the output device the game uses is the headphones or speakers you are actually listening through. A game can keep an old device selected even after you switch the system default.
- Restart Metro after any change. Audio routing is often read only when the game starts.
Step 3: Match the speaker layout to the real output device
Bethesda Support has a troubleshooting article for a different game, not Metro, which says missing audio is often the result of the sound being set to 5.1 when only two speakers are present. Its recommendation is to choose Stereo for standard non-surround output. This is useful context, not a Metro-specific fix.
Rank #2
- Open Settings > System > Sound, select your output device, and open its device properties.
- Find the speaker or channel configuration setting. If you use headphones or two speakers, set it to Stereo.
- Only choose a surround layout if your hardware actually has the extra channels.
- Launch Metro and test the same scene again.
When sound changes with viewing direction
Some Metro 2033 Redux players on PC report that sounds from the area they are aiming at become almost inaudible. In one Steam Community thread from 2018, a reply suggested disabling 7.1 or surround output, and the original poster said a Windows audio configuration change resolved it. A GOG.com forum post from 2019 reports that switching Windows from surround to stereo made cut-off or quiet dialogue better, but the poster said the problem was not completely fixed.
These are individual reports, not official confirmation, and they do not agree on one setting. If you test this:

- Immerse yourself in the Moscow Metro - witness one of the most atmospheric worlds in gaming brought to life with stunning next-gen visuals at 60FPS
- Rebuilt and Remastered for next gen - with all previous DLC content included, new modes and features, and many gameplay improvements
- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create one epic solo adventure, plus a further 10 hours of bonus content
- Two unique Play Styles : 'Spartan' and 'Survival'
- The legendary Ranger Mode returns - dare you play the fearsome Ranger Mode?
- Change only the Windows speaker layout from surround to stereo, then test in the same location.
- Keep a note of which setting you changed, so you can revert it if nothing improves.
- Expect partial improvement at best from anecdotal reports. A remaining directional problem may need a different fix or a report to Steam Support.
When all game audio is gone
If the game is completely silent while other PC audio works, the problem is more likely in the game’s audio output path than in directional mixing. A 2018 Metro 2033 Redux thread on Steam includes community suggestions covering volume and configuration checks and reinstalling DirectX files. One poster said one of the suggested steps worked for them. That is an old user report, not official guidance, and it does not establish a general solution. Repair or reinstall DirectX-related files only after the Step 2 checks, and treat it as a last resort rather than a first fix.

If the basic checks do not solve the problem, gather these details first so support can narrow the cause:
- Which version you run: original Metro 2033 or Metro 2033 Redux
- Platform (PC or console) and, on PC, your Windows version
- The exact output device (headphones, speakers, or HDMI display audio) and any channel setting you changed
- Whether the problem is total silence, missing dialogue or effects, or sound that changes with viewing direction
- Whether other apps on the same PC play audio normally
Official routes are the Steam support pages for Metro 2033 Redux and for the original Metro 2033.
