In the original Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell on Xbox, press the Black button to open Quick Inventory, choose Gadgets, then select Lock Pick. At a locked door, use the selected gadget and move the Left Thumbstick to find and release the pins. On PC, open Quick Inventory with Left Shift, select Lock Pick, press Fire, then work the pins with W, A, S, or D.
Xbox: equip and use the lock pick
- Press the Black button to open Quick Inventory.
- Navigate to Gadgets and select Lock Pick.
- At the locked door, use the selected gadget to start picking.
- Move the Left Thumbstick to find the direction that moves a pin. Keep using that direction until the pin releases, then repeat for the remaining pins.
The original Xbox guide documents Black as the Quick Inventory button and the Left Thumbstick for releasing pins: Xbox guide.

PC: equip and use the lock pick
- Press Left Shift to open Quick Inventory.
- Select Lock Pick from the inventory’s Gadgets list.
- At the locked door, press Fire to start using it.
- Press W, A, S, or D to find a direction that moves the current pin. Repeat that direction until the pin releases, then find and release the next pin.
The original PC manual lists Left Shift for Quick Inventory and says to select the lock pick and press Fire to use it: PC manual. Its pin controls are documented in the PC controls reference.
Make sure you have the original game
These instructions cover the original Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, not later entries in the series. Controls and lockpicking mechanics can differ between games, so don’t assume this button sequence applies to a sequel.
