If GOG Galaxy shows “Failed to load game database,” first restart the client, check for a current update, and consult GOG’s current support guidance before changing local files. The message does not identify one confirmed cause. The best-documented reports concern a 2022 beta release, so the workarounds from that period are historical community reports—not verified fixes for today’s client.
Start with low-risk checks
- Exit Galaxy completely. Close the client and make sure its background processes are no longer running before trying any database repair.
- Check for a current Galaxy update. The reports most often discussed a 2022 beta issue; an update reported at the time as version 2.0.49 was a historical hotfix, not evidence of a current remedy.
- Look up current GOG support instructions. A Reddit discussion linked to a GOG support article, but that page returned 404 when checked on October 8, 2026. Current official instructions could not be confirmed from the available evidence.
- If the error remains, contact GOG support before editing or removing database files, especially if you are unsure which Galaxy data is safe to change.
Why the error does not point to one certain cause
The clearest cluster of reports dates to April 2022 and involved Galaxy beta 2.0.48.63. In an April 26 forum post, a user-shared client log showed a missing ProductConfiguration record for a product ID immediately before the “Failed to load game database” message. That log documents one reported failure; it does not establish a universal diagnosis or explain every occurrence of the same error.
Because the version-specific reports are several years old, do not assume that their diagnosis or repair applies to a current Galaxy release.
Historical workaround: move the local database aside
Community reports describe renaming or deleting %ProgramData%GOG.comGalaxystoragegalaxy-2.0.db, after which Galaxy recreated a database. Other reports describe renaming or removing the storage folder. This is a historical workaround, not a confirmed current GOG fix. Changing these files can remove library metadata and may mean setting up Galaxy again.

Before you try it
- Make sure Galaxy and its background processes are fully closed.
- Back up the database or relevant storage folder first. Renaming the file or folder is more reversible than deleting it.
- Expect that you may need to scan for or import installed games. Some users also reported restoring preferences or reconnecting integrations.
If you proceed, use the file location above and rename the database file rather than permanently deleting it. Restart Galaxy and see whether it rebuilds its database. If it does not, restore your backup and contact support rather than trying additional database changes blindly.
Advanced option: edit the database only with a backup
A community post describes using a SQLite editor to add missing ProductConfiguration rows for products in InstalledBaseProducts; a secondary guide reproduced a query for that repair. This is community-provided database editing, not verified current official guidance. An unsuitable query or edits to the wrong file can cause further problems.

Unless you are comfortable inspecting SQLite databases and can verify the exact database and query for your Galaxy version, skip this option. Keep an untouched backup and close all Galaxy processes before any database work. The available evidence does not establish that this edit is appropriate for current releases.
Reinstalling Galaxy is not a guaranteed clean reset
Reinstalling the client appears among historical workarounds, but reports also describe having to rescan or re-import installed games afterward. They do not establish that reinstalling preserves every preference, library detail, or integration. Do not reinstall your games just because Galaxy no longer lists them; first check whether the existing installations can be scanned or imported into the client.

When to stop troubleshooting locally
Contact GOG support if the error persists after restarting and checking for updates, if you cannot identify the correct database file, or if a database reset does not restore Galaxy. Include your Galaxy version, when the error began, and the steps you already tried. Avoid repeated deletion or database edits without a working backup.
