If Xbox Party Chat is down, not working, or keeps disconnecting, check Xbox service status first. If there is no relevant alert, narrow the cause by platform: test the console’s network and NAT, or check Windows microphone permissions and selected audio devices. Then review communication privacy settings, chat audio routing, and the headset or controller connection before considering a hardware replacement.
Check whether Xbox Party Chat is down for everyone
Start with the Xbox Live status page and look for an alert related to social features or parties. Status is live and can change, so check it when the problem is happening rather than relying on an older report.
Next, work out how broad the problem is. Are you on an Xbox console or using the Xbox app or Game Bar on Windows? Can other people in the party hear one another? Does the game’s audio work while party voice does not? A failure affecting multiple people at once may point toward a service or shared network issue; a problem limited to one person is more likely to need a device, account, or local network check. These clues help choose what to test, but do not prove the cause by themselves.
If Xbox Party Chat is not working on a console
Test the network and check NAT
On Xbox, open Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection. Check the reported NAT status as well. If the console reports a connection or NAT problem, follow Xbox’s network troubleshooting guidance; your router manufacturer or internet provider may also need to help.

An Open NAT does not guarantee that party voice will work, and changing one router setting is not a universal fix. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit networking documentation, last updated July 7, 2026, says the preferred local UDP multiplayer port defaults to UDP 3074, can use automatic fallbacks, and can be overridden manually through Xbox network settings. The documentation explains technical network behavior, not a consumer router recipe; do not treat port forwarding as the default next step.
Review communication and privacy permissions
Check the account’s Xbox privacy and online-safety settings for communication and multiplayer permissions. Restrictions can prevent voice communication even if the party appears connected. The precise menu wording may change; Microsoft’s Microsoft Q&A checklist identifies these permissions as a troubleshooting area.

Check party output and chat balance
If you can hear game audio but cannot hear friends, inspect the party’s audio output and headset chat balance before assuming the network is at fault. Xbox describes a headset chat mixer as a way to adjust game sound relative to chat in its headset catalog. Also confirm that party audio is routed to the headset or speakers you are actually using.
If Xbox Party Chat is not working on Windows
Confirm the input and output devices
In Xbox Game Bar’s Party Chat settings, select the microphone you intend to use as the input and the headphones or speakers you intend to use as the output. Check the headset’s physical mute switch or button, and make sure chat audio is not routed to a different device. The Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting checklist includes device selection and audio output among the checks for party chat.

Allow microphone access
Check Windows privacy settings and make sure microphone access is enabled for the relevant app. If the selected microphone works in another app but not in Xbox Game Bar, the app’s permission or device selection is a more useful lead than replacing the headset.
Test the headset and controller before replacing anything
Reseat a wired headset plug or reconnect a wireless headset, check its mute controls, and test the current headset and controller in another supported setup if one is available. If you can, try a known-good headset on the same setup. A problem that follows one headset or microphone points more strongly to hardware than a failure that persists across devices.

Consider an Xbox-compatible wired gaming headset only if these checks indicate a headset or microphone fault. A new headset cannot resolve an Xbox service incident, a network or NAT issue, a restricted account, or a Windows permission problem.
