They do not show any shutdown of Roblox connected to the sound. The claim that the sound came from Tommy Tallarico’s game Messiah is also not settled by those statements.
Did Roblox shut down because of the ‘oof’ sound?
There is no evidence in the reviewed sources of a Roblox shutdown tied to the sound. The rumor appears to conflate two real events, the sound’s removal in 2022 and its restoration in 2025, with a shutdown that never happened. Everything below is limited to those documented events.
Timeline of the ‘oof’ sound
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| January 11, 2020 | Roblox posts its account of where the sound came from and responds to Tommy Tallarico’s claims. | Roblox Developer Forum, “In response to the ‘oof’ sound discussion” |
| November 10, 2020 | Roblox announces the Tommy Tallarico Sound Design Kit. | Roblox Developer Forum, “Tommy Tallarico Sound Design Kit Now Available” |
| July 26, 2022 | Roblox removes the “oof” sound and adds a replacement default sound, citing a licensing issue. | NME, “‘Roblox’ removes ‘oof’ death sound” |
| July 31, 2025 | Roblox announces that “oof” is returning as the default death sound. | Roblox Developer Forum, “‘OOF’ is back as default sound on Roblox!” |
Why Roblox removed the sound in 2022
Roblox’s stated reason, as reported by NME on July 26, 2022, was a licensing issue. The statement read: “Related to sounds, due to a licensing issue we have removed the ‘oof’ sound from Roblox and have created a replacement default sound which launches today.” The quoted statement does not identify the party involved in the licensing issue, so the reason is Roblox’s own explanation and is not independently detailed.
The 2020 dispute and Roblox’s account of the sound’s origin
The removal followed a longer dispute. In its January 11, 2020 Developer Forum post, Roblox said its founders, Erik and David, obtained the “oof” sound along with the original Roblox sounds from a stock sound CD-ROM they had purchased. The post stated: “Roblox’s founders, Erik and David, got the oof sound (along with all the original Roblox sounds) from a stock sound CD-ROM they purchased of licensed, copyright free sounds (not from an illegal website as Tommy has suggested on social media).”

Roblox also said it had been working in good faith toward a resolution with Tallarico, and that he had not provided proof of ownership to Roblox. This is Roblox’s side of the dispute. It is not an independent finding on copyright or authorship, and it should be read as a company position.
What the July 2025 return changed
On July 31, 2025, Roblox announced the return of the original sound. The post said: “On the back of releasing the original ‘OOF’ sound, we’re happy to say that by popular demand it is officially returning as the default death sound on Roblox.” The announcement was posted under xBigBroGreg in Roblox’s official Developer Forum announcements.

The restored sound applies to experiences that have not customized their death sound. Players and creators who want to hear it should know the following:
- Experiences with a custom death sound keep their own sound. The default only applies where the creator has not set one.
- Desktop and console updates were scheduled for July 31, 2025.
- Mobile updates were rolling out over the following days, so the sound may not appear on every device on the same day.
- Client and Studio must both be updated for the change to take effect.
The primary announcement does not disclose the terms of any agreement or payment linked to the return. Windows Central reported on July 31, 2025 that the specifics were unclear, and its article is headlined around “three years of licensing issues.” No reliable settlement amount or license term was established in the sources, so none is stated here.

The Messiah link
The title ties the sound to Tallarico’s game Messiah. The Roblox statements reviewed establish that a dispute existed and show how Roblox described its sourcing. They do not establish who originally created or recorded the sound, and they do not confirm that the sound came from Messiah. Any claim that places the origin in Messiah should be attributed to whoever makes it, and is not supported by Roblox’s own announcements.
The 2020 Tallarico Sound Design Kit
Roblox announced the Tommy Tallarico Sound Design Kit on November 10, 2020. According to that post, the kit was a one-time purchase that allowed buyers to use the purchased sounds in their own Roblox games, and buyers could not give the sounds to other developers. This describes the offer as announced in 2020. The sources reviewed do not verify whether the kit is still available or what its current terms are.
