Yes, Joy-Con 2 sticks may be susceptible to drift, but iFixit’s teardown did not show that Switch 2 drift is widespread or establish how often it happens. The June 2025 teardown found what iFixit identified as a potentiometer-style stick, a design whose readings can be affected by wear or contamination. That points to a possible failure mechanism—not a measured failure rate.
What did iFixit find in the Switch 2 teardown?
In its June 6, 2025 teardown, iFixit said the Joy-Con 2 sticks appeared to use “the same old potentiometer tech” as earlier Joy-Con. The team reported seeing no visible Hall-effect or TMR sensor and described the sticks as “probably still drifty.” That conclusion came from inspecting the hardware, not from a long-term test or a survey measuring how many Switch 2 owners experience drift.
Why potentiometer sticks can drift
A potentiometer measures stick movement as a wiper travels across resistive material and changes the electrical reading. If that material wears, or dust and plastic debris interfere with the sensor, the controller can report a position the player is not commanding. This explains why the design may be vulnerable; it does not mean every stick will fail or predict when one might.
What the teardown says about repair
iFixit gave the Switch 2 a repairability score of 3 out of 10. It described the Joy-Con opening process as difficult, citing hidden screws and adhesive, and said battery removal was challenging. The score and observations are iFixit’s assessment of its teardown, not a universal industry rating.

What has Nintendo said about Joy-Con 2 sticks?
In an April 7, 2025 Nintendo Life interview, Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Product Development & Publishing Nate Bihldorff was asked about the stick technology. He replied: “They’re not Hall Effect sticks, but they feel really good.”
That confirms Joy-Con 2 sticks are not Hall-effect designs. It does not establish whether they will drift in ordinary use, nor does it give a failure rate.

- These updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have a color scheme inspired by Deep Cut from the Splatoon franchise. They have HD rumble, easy-to-use motion and mouse controls, and a C Button for easy GameChat* access (available in compatible games).
Is Switch 2 Joy-Con drift widespread?
The available evidence does not establish widespread Joy-Con 2 drift. A Nintendo Life replacement guide published May 28, 2026 said that, at the time, there did not appear to be widespread fault or drift reports. That is a time-bound editorial observation, not measured reliability data. It does not overturn iFixit’s engineering concern, but it is a reason not to present potential susceptibility as an existing widespread problem.
No properly sourced statistic for Switch 2 Joy-Con drift prevalence is established in the cited material. iFixit’s teardown article mentions an older figure about original Switch owners, but the cited passage does not identify its original survey publisher or year, so it should not be treated as a verified rate for Switch 2.

What should you do if a Joy-Con 2 stick behaves incorrectly?
First distinguish a calibration or contamination issue from a worn or damaged stick. The troubleshooting advice on iFixit’s original Switch Joy-Con drift page starts with calibration and external cleaning; it discusses direct cleaning when debris is involved and replacement when the stick is mechanically worn. Those instructions concern original Joy-Con, not Joy-Con 2, so do not assume that every step is validated for the newer controller.
- Calibration or cleaning: These are lower-disassembly checks described for original Joy-Con. Calibration may address calibration issues, and cleaning may help if contamination is the cause; neither restores worn resistive material.
- Replacement: A Joy-Con 2-specific replacement guide is available, but confirm that any part you buy is explicitly compatible with Joy-Con 2. A guide’s existence does not show that a widespread fault exists.
- Service: If the controller may be covered or you are not comfortable opening it, consider Nintendo or a professional repair provider before attempting disassembly. Coverage and service terms vary by region; the cited sources do not establish current Switch 2 terms for each region.
Can original Switch replacement sticks be used in Joy-Con 2?
Compatibility is not established by the cited sources. iFixit’s original Joy-Con repair resource discusses Hall-effect replacement modules and other stick variations, while its Switch 2 teardown mentions GuliKit as a possible third-party direction based on prior Switch models. Neither reference verifies that an original Switch part or a particular GuliKit, Hall-effect, or TMR module fits Joy-Con 2. Check for explicit Joy-Con 2 compatibility rather than relying on a similar product name or appearance.
