Quake Champions was built with technology from both id Software and Saber Interactive, but the available evidence does not confirm that its planned Vulkan renderer ever shipped. In a 2016 interview, id Software studio head Tim Willits said id technology handled gameplay physics and movement while Saber handled rendering. In 2017, Vulkan support was described first as a rendering path in development and then more cautiously as something under consideration.
How id and Saber technology were divided
Quake Champions was a co-developed hybrid, rather than a game built solely on one company’s engine. In an August 2016 interview, id Software studio head Tim Willits said Saber’s technology had proved a better fit for the Arena-shooter concept during early development. He described id technology as providing gameplay elements such as physics and movement, with Saber’s technology handling rendering. That is Willits’ account of the division, not an independently audited technical breakdown.
The distinction mattered to the game’s design: Willits associated id’s gameplay systems with preserving the classic Quake feel, while the visual rendering work came from Saber’s technology. PCGamesHardware’s August 18, 2016 interview published those comments in German; the English wording here is a translation. Stevivor’s August 25, 2016 interview also identifies the project as a combination of id Tech 5 and Saber technology.
Was Quake Champions built on id Tech 5 or id Tech 6?
The sources do not support treating a precise id Tech version as settled. Stevivor’s headline specifies id Tech 5, and its interview with Willits says the game was not using id Tech 6. Other coverage used id Tech 6 language: HotHardware’s Vulkan report used that description in its headline, while the topic has also been framed that way elsewhere.

The safest description is an id-and-Saber technology hybrid. The accounts agree on the collaboration and the broad division of responsibilities, but they differ in how they label id’s engine version.
Does Quake Champions support Vulkan?
The cited 2017 reports establish discussion and development plans, not that Vulkan support reached a released version of the game. HotHardware reported on April 4, 2017, that an id Software senior producer described a Vulkan rendering path as in development and expected a patch during beta testing. A developer Q&A reproduced by ESReality on May 26, 2017 used more tentative wording: senior producer Matt Charles said, “Vulkan is being considered, but currently we are focusing on getting the game done.”

Those statements describe different stages of intent; neither verifies delivery. The material available here does not establish that the planned Vulkan renderer shipped, so it is not accurate to present Vulkan support as a confirmed feature on that basis. The Q&A is reproduced at ESReality, which points to the original Bethesda community thread.

According to id Software’s FAQ dated September 23, 2026, Quake Champions moved from free-to-play to paid ownership on Steam, and the Microsoft Store version was retired. The FAQ says players of the former free-to-play release who qualified retained access without additional charge; the steps depend on whether they played through Steam or the Microsoft Store.
