Starfield has had several distinct docking-related bugs, but the available evidence does not establish one current cause or a universal fix for players who cannot dock. Bethesda documented fixes for specific cases in 2023 and 2024; its latest reviewed patch notes, dated May 14, 2026, do not list a general docking fix. Check the symptom and mission before trying a workaround.
First, identify what is failing
“Unable to dock” can describe different points in the interaction. Note the exact mission and objective, then distinguish among these symptoms:

- No docking prompt: You reach the ship or station, but the option to dock does not appear.
- Docking repeats or fails with a particular ship: The interaction starts, but docking does not proceed as expected.
- The target leaves: You try to dock as a ship grav-jumps away.
- Docking works, but communication or quest progress does not: Hailing, boarding, or advancing the objective fails. These are not interchangeable with docking itself.
Documented Starfield docking-related cases
Bethesda has fixed multiple specific issues, rather than identifying one shared docking bug. The cases differ in symptom, context, and evidence:

The first three entries are documented fixes for particular situations. The GitHub entry is an individual, unverified report—not confirmation of a widespread problem or a diagnosis for other players.

What the latest reviewed patch notes establish
Bethesda’s May 14, 2026 notes for update 1.16.242 describe the update as available on all platforms and include gameplay and quest fixes, including fixes for Into the Void and Lone Wolf. They do not list a general docking fix. That means only that the issue is not listed in those notes; it does not prove that every docking problem remains, or that no player can currently dock. Bethesda’s April 7, 2026 Free Lanes notes list a range of updates and quest fixes, including changes to Friends Like These, Guilty Parties, and The Hammer Falls, but do not identify a broad docking issue among the listed changes. Patch-note omissions alone cannot establish whether a particular player’s bug is present or resolved. Read the Free Lanes notes.

What to try if you cannot dock
- Record the exact failure. Note the mission, objective, platform, installed game version, and whether the prompt is missing, docking fails, the target leaves, or communication or quest progress is blocked.
- Install the latest update available for your platform. The latest official notes reviewed here are dated May 14, 2026; later updates may change the situation. Check the game’s version after updating.
- Refresh the affected area. Bethesda Support’s general mission troubleshooting guidance suggests fast traveling away and returning, or entering an instanced area and then returning. - If the issue persists, preserve the affected save and contact Bethesda Support. Include the mission and objective, platform, installed game version, and a precise description of what happens at the interaction. Avoid deleting saves or making drastic ship-builder changes as supposed universal fixes; the cited evidence does not establish those as remedies.
