That launch is documented, but it does not establish that Bethesda’s original browser game still works today. Current Bethesda and Steam listings offer other digital access routes, though their price and availability depend on the live store and your region.

SitePoint described that 2012 version as a faithful rendering of the DOS game, with every level playable through a JavaScript and HTML5-audio implementation. Those details describe the historical port, not the requirements or performance of a current browser game. Its reported Bethesda address should likewise be treated as historical: the available evidence does not verify that the page remains accessible or authorized today.
Can you play Wolfenstein 3D in a browser for free today?
That is not established. The historical reports confirm that Bethesda offered a browser version in 2012, but they do not confirm its present status. Nor do they verify that another browser-hosted copy is authorized. Avoid treating an unofficial emulator or copy as a Bethesda-supported way to play.

What current digital versions are listed?
Bethesda’s catalog
Bethesda’s current catalog listing identifies Wolfenstein 3D as an Xbox title. The listing establishes a platform option, not a particular price, subscription benefit, or availability in every region.
Steam
Steam’s listing identifies Bethesda Softworks as publisher and describes the title as an id Software game developed in 1992. Check the live store page for your region to confirm whether it is available and what it costs; the listing alone does not establish that it is free or included with a subscription.

Germany-specific availability announcement
On September 7, 2022, Bethesda announced that the unchanged original PC game had become available in German digital stores, including Steam and the Microsoft Store, after receiving a USK age rating of 16. This is a dated statement about Germany, not a guarantee of current availability elsewhere or in every store. See Bethesda’s announcement.

No. id Software’s GitHub source-code repository includes terms that retain ownership and restrict commercial exploitation of the software and assets. A source-code release does not make the game’s artwork, music, trademark, or complete game freely reusable for commercial purposes.
