Old School RuneScape’s Sailing skill launched on November 19, 2025, and Jagex’s official skill page now labels it “OUT NOW.” Jagex describes Sailing as the game’s first new skill. It lets members captain ships, explore the oceans around Gielinor, discover new locations and take on maritime activities. Here’s what the skill includes, who can access it and what Jagex has announced for its next chapter.
When did Sailing come out in OSRS?
Jagex announced Sailing’s launch for November 19, 2025. The skill is live, according to the official Old School RuneScape Sailing page, which currently displays “OUT NOW.” Jagex calls it Old School RuneScape’s first new skill; the original “in 12 years” wording is not independently established by the cited announcements.
What can you do with the Sailing skill?
Jagex’s launch announcement describes Sailing as a way to take command of your own ship and explore Gielinor’s oceans. Its announced activities range from finding new places to completing tasks at ports, salvaging shipwrecks and navigating dangerous waters. These are Jagex’s feature descriptions, not an independent assessment of how the skill plays.
Explore and discover locations
Players can use a spyglass to search for locations and small islands, including Great Conch island. Exploration opens up new areas to visit and activities to pursue at ports.

Take on trails, hazards and salvage
Jagex announced three Barracuda trails, unlocked at level 30 Sailing. The trails involve hazardous waters. The launch announcement also describes shipwreck salvage and treasure hunting, along with new enemy types: krakens, sharks, orcas, frost dragons and gryphons.
Upgrade ships and connect with other skills
Ship upgrades are part of the announced progression. Jagex also says Sailing connects with other parts of OSRS, including gathering, Woodcutting, Fletching, Farming, Fishing and Cooking, as well as sources of potion and spell resources.

Do you need membership to play Sailing?
Yes. Jagex’s launch announcement says Sailing is available to RuneScape Members. The official OSRS page lists the game on PC, Steam, iOS and Android, and says cross-platform progression is supported. That means players can continue progression across supported platforms; the cited sources do not establish a platform ranking or differences in performance.
How was Sailing developed with the community?
Jagex says it worked on Sailing in close collaboration with the community, with opportunities for players to vote on key milestones and shape the skill’s direction. In a March 2025 RuneFest announcement, Jagex said an alpha was planned for that month and outlined an early progression concept: moving from a small raft toward commanding a crew and traveling through hazardous waters. Those statements show community involvement and development plans, but do not mean players designed or approved every feature.

What Sailing content did Jagex announce for 2026?
On January 26, 2026, Jagex announced plans to expand Sailing during 2026 with additional quests, a new Barracuda Trial and activities around the Red Reef. That announcement is a roadmap, not confirmation that each item has since launched.
