Which third-party controllers work with Switch 2?
Compatibility is model-specific. 8BitDo lists its Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad for Switch 2. PowerA lists its Advantage Wireless Controller for Nintendo Switch 2 with Lumectra and Wireless Controller for Nintendo Switch 2 as compatible. Nintendo Life reports that both 8BitDo Ultimate 2 variants work after a firmware update; confirm the exact model and required firmware before purchase.
Nintendo’s compatibility guide covers select Nintendo controllers and accessories, not every third-party controller. Its listing of the Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter, for example, applies to TV mode when the adapter is connected to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock. It does not establish compatibility for every third-party GameCube-style controller or adapter.

Choose by the feature that matters most
If you want multiple connection modes
The Pro 3 is the clearest documented choice for switching between Bluetooth, 2.4G and wired play. Its key trade-off is that 8BitDo Support says it does not wake Switch 2 from sleep.
If you want to choose your face-button layout
The Ultimate 2 Bluetooth has the Nintendo-style layout, while the Ultimate 2 Wireless has the Xbox-style layout, according to Nintendo Life. The variants are separate products, not simply different connection settings. Check the exact SKU and firmware requirement: Nintendo Life says Switch 2 use requires an update.

If you want a C Button and rechargeable power
PowerA’s Advantage Wireless with Lumectra combines a C Button, motion controls, programmable rear buttons and a rechargeable battery. PowerA specifies up to 14 hours per charge; actual runtime beyond that manufacturer rating is not established here. It omits HD rumble, IR camera and amiibo NFC, and is not suitable for Joy-Con-only games.
If you want AA batteries and a lower listed price
PowerA’s standard Wireless Controller uses two included AA batteries and has a full-size D-pad, motion controls and a C Button. Its U.S. list price was $44.99 on the accessed page, compared with $64.99 for the Lumectra model. Those are page prices, not guaranteed current prices. Like the Lumectra model, it omits HD rumble, IR camera and amiibo NFC and cannot be used for Joy-Con-only games.

Check these details before you buy
- Exact compatibility: Look for Switch 2 support for the precise model or SKU rather than assuming an older Switch controller will work.
- Firmware: Nintendo Life reports an update is needed for the Ultimate 2 variants. Verify the applicable update for your model.
- Wake-from-sleep: 8BitDo Support says the Pro 3 cannot wake Switch 2; it says that feature works only with Joy-Con 2 or the Switch 2 Pro Controller. Nintendo Life has mentioned a beta firmware update with shake-to-wake, but that does not establish general availability, so do not rely on it unless 8BitDo confirms release status.
- Feature parity: “Compatible” does not mean every first-party feature is included. In particular, PowerA states that both listed controllers lack HD rumble, IR camera and amiibo NFC.
- Game requirements: PowerA says its two listed wireless controllers do not work with games that require Joy-Con controls.
