When a horror-game pursuer seems impossible to kill, treat the encounter as an escape problem until the game shows otherwise: learn what detects you, break line of sight before hiding, manage noise, and plan a route before triggering an objective. These enemies do not all follow the same rules, so use each game’s cues and mechanics rather than relying on one universal trick.
First, learn whether the enemy is meant to be fought
Some pursuers can be interrupted or damaged; others are designed to be evaded, or only briefly stunned. In The Outlast Trials, Epic Games Store’s guide describes limited ways to stun enemies but says players cannot fight them normally for long. By contrast, Alien: Isolation gives Amanda stealth and distraction tools. Check the game’s tutorials, indicators, and available actions before spending resources on an attack or assuming combat is pointless.

It also helps to identify what the game uses to detect you: sight, sound, light, proximity, or a scripted trigger. A hiding place that defeats one detection method may not defeat another. Treat a pursuer as a set of rules to discover, not as a generic enemy with a guaranteed counter.
Break line of sight before you hide
Do not duck into a locker or crouch behind an object while the enemy is watching, unless the game explicitly makes that safe. In The Outlast Trials, an Ex-Pop can grab and damage a player who attempts to hide while still in clear view, according to Epic Games Store’s survival guide. First move behind a solid obstacle, turn a corner, or get through a door; then hide once the pursuer can no longer see you.

For Outlast, GamesRadar’s guide similarly advises turning corners and shutting doors before hiding. A door or corner is useful because it interrupts sight, but it is not a promise that the enemy has stopped searching. Listen and watch for signs of the search before emerging.
Move quietly unless speed is worth the risk
Running can create distance quickly, but in stealth-focused encounters it may also announce your location. The Feral Interactive manual for Alien: Isolation says crouching makes Amanda harder to spot and quieter, while running attracts unwanted attention. Move at a quiet pace through dangerous areas when the game rewards stealth; sprint when you need to cross an exposed gap, escape a closing threat, or meet a timed objective.

Pay attention to environmental noise as well as movement. Epic’s The Outlast Trials guide identifies broken glass, bashing doors, noise alarms, and tin cans as hazards or sound sources that can draw enemies. If a route is littered with noisy obstacles, compare it with a longer, quieter alternative before committing.
Prepare an escape route before noisy objectives
Switches, machinery, and other interactions can hold you in place or make enough noise to bring a pursuer over. Before starting one, locate the nearest cover or hiding place and decide where you will go next. GamesRadar recommends checking for hiding places before activating noisy switches in Outlast; that small bit of scouting can prevent an objective from becoming a dead-end encounter.

- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.

Distractions are useful only when they move attention away from the route you intend to take. In Alien: Isolation, noise can be used deliberately to lure the Alien, but noticeable equipment can also attract attention. Make the sound, then leave promptly rather than staying nearby to see what happens. If the game offers a map or motion tracker, use it to orient yourself, but keep checking the surroundings: the Alien: Isolation manual cautions that looking at the tracker focuses your vision on it.

The Outlast Trials
Epic’s guide recommends enabling the Noise Indicator and Darkness Indicator so you can better judge sound and visibility. Darkness can help break sight, but watch for traps and other threats in unlit areas. Thrown bottles or bricks and temporary stuns can create an opening; the guide also recommends the Blind Rig for a solo player being chased. These are title-specific options, and controls or rig behavior can change with game updates, so confirm them in your current version.

Alien: Isolation
Lockers and containers can provide hiding places, but the Alien may get close enough that you need to hold your breath and lean back. The manual also advises securing the immediate area before saving because saving takes several seconds; if your current position leaves you in danger, it says to load a previous save. Its listed keyboard controls describe the default PC setup, not necessarily a gamepad or customized bindings.
Outlast and other pursuer stories
In Outlast, observing a patrol from a safe location can reveal when to cross or which route to use, according to GamesRadar. Patrols, obstacles, and encounters differ by situation, so apply the advice to the specific sequence rather than assuming every enemy behaves identically. Nemesis-T Type in Resident Evil 3 is another well-known pursuer: Capcom’s Resident Evil Portal identifies the character as the “Pursuer” and describes the chase across locations. That supports the example, but the page is franchise lore, not a tactical guide.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
If the chase keeps ending in the same failure
Change the conditions instead of repeating the same sprint. Try a different route, wait for patrol movement when it is safe, alter your timing, or use a different elevation or passage if the game provides one. If a noisy objective repeatedly exposes you, scout the escape path first or approach it from another direction. When the game supports saving and your current save leaves you trapped, returning to an earlier save may be safer than trying the same failing escape again.
- Before pursuit, note the objective, nearby doors, corners, gaps, hiding places, and a fallback route.
- When spotted, use solid cover to break sight before choosing a hiding place.
- During a search, stay quiet and do not assume every locker or container is safe.
- Use a stun or distraction to create time or redirect attention, then move toward your planned exit.
There is no dependable tactic that works across every horror game. What transfers is the decision process: identify the detection rules, interrupt the pursuit in a way that game recognizes, and spend noise, speed, and resources only when they buy a useful opening.
