Before changing system software, make a verified copy of your saves. PS4 and PS5 both support a full-console USB backup, while PlayStation Plus cloud storage backs up game saves separately. The paths and restore risks differ by generation. Sony’s official guidance does not establish that any particular jailbreak is safe or reversible; this guide covers data protection and official procedures, not jailbreak instructions.

Choose between a full-console backup and a game-save backup

A full-console USB backup covers more than saves. Sony lists games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings among the backup categories on both consoles. A full restore is consequential: it replaces or erases data already on the console. PlayStation Plus cloud storage, by contrast, is for saved data and lets you upload or download saves without restoring the whole console.

Option What it covers What you need Important distinction
Full-console USB backup Games and apps, saved data, captures, and settings; available on PS4 and PS5 A compatible USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT Restoring can erase existing console data. PS4 saves can also be copied to USB individually; Sony’s storage guidance does not provide USB copying of PS5 saved data.
PlayStation Plus cloud storage Game saved data, not a full-console backup PlayStation Plus membership and network access Upload and download saves by title; check status rather than assuming the latest save is already online.

For a full-console USB backup, use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive; Sony warns that not every USB device works. A PS5 USB extended-storage drive used for games is not the correct device for a full backup because Sony says it uses a different format. Sony’s PS5 backup instructions and PS4 backup instructions provide the applicable requirements.

Back up a PS4 to USB

  1. Sync trophies separately. Open Trophies, press OPTIONS, then select Sync Trophies With PSN. Sony says trophies are not included in the full backup.
  2. Connect a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. Leave enough free space: Sony requires at least twice the size of the resulting backup file. If space is limited, Sony says you can omit application data.
  3. Open the backup menu. Go to Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
  4. Select categories and start the backup. Follow the on-screen prompts and keep the console powered on until it reports completion.
  5. Safely finish before removing the drive. Do not disconnect the USB drive or power off during backup.

To restore later, use Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore PS4. Sony warns that this erases all data saved on the console, even if you cancel the restore, and the deletion cannot be undone.

Back up a PS5 to USB

  1. Connect a compatible FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. Do not use the USB extended-storage drive for games as the full-backup device; its format differs.
  2. Open the backup menu. Go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
  3. Choose what to include. Select the data types, then choose Next and Back Up.
  4. Wait for the completion screen. The console restarts during the process. Keep it powered on and connected to the drive until the backup-complete screen appears.

To restore, use the same Back Up and Restore area. Restoring erases data currently saved on the console. The system software version at restore must be the same as or newer than the version installed when the backup was made. To restore to another console, sign in with the same PlayStation account; if you have never signed in to PlayStation services, Sony limits restoration to the same console. Restore also disables Console Sharing and Offline Play, which you must enable again if you want those features. See Sony’s PS5 backup and restore instructions.

Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for saves

PlayStation Plus membership is required. Sony’s current support guidance lists up to 100 GB each for PS4 and PS5 saved data, with a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are storage limits, not a guarantee that every game handles synchronization in the same way. Cloud storage does not include the other categories in a full-console backup.

Upload or download PS4 saves

On PS4, go to Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage, then choose Upload to Online Storage. To retrieve a save, open Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage. Check upload status or manually upload before changing system software.

Manage PS5 and PS4 saves from a PS5

On PS5, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4). Sony documents upload and download controls and a per-game sync-status check. PS5 game saves sync to the most recent data; PS4 saves are automatically uploaded but must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage. See Sony’s guidance for PS5 cloud storage and PS4 online storage.

Will a system update delete my saves?

A normal system software update is different from a reset or reinstallation. Sony documents update paths, but its Safe Mode guidance warns that some options can result in data loss and advises backing up first. On PS5, Repair Console Storage is documented as not erasing data; Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data. On PS4, Initialize PS4 and Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data. Do not treat repair or database-rebuild options as equivalent to reset/reinstall actions.

For a normal PS4 update, Sony documents Settings > System Software Update. Its manual USB update method requires FAT32 or exFAT, a PS4/UPDATE directory, and the official file named PS4UPDATE.PUP. Reinstallation uses a different official reinstallation file and deletes all console data. Follow Sony’s current PS4 system software instructions rather than using an update file from another source. Sony states: “Do not download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.” Sony also warns that data from another source or an altered system might not operate properly or install official update data, and that this can affect warranty and repair eligibility.
