An unstoppable enemy removes that option, so the player has to survive the encounter rather than win it. That shift can keep threat and uncertainty alive—but it is one ingredient in horror, not a guarantee that every unkillable monster is frightening.
Fighting back gives danger an endpoint
When an enemy can be attacked and defeated, the player has a clear plan: confront the threat, manage the cost, and potentially end the encounter. Even if the fight is difficult, combat can make danger feel like a problem with a solution.

An enemy that cannot be reliably killed takes that solution away. The player’s goal becomes getting through contact: hide, distract, choose another route, or wait for an opening. Those choices still give the player agency, but they do not necessarily remove the threat. This is one reason a defenseless protagonist can feel exposed: the monster sits outside the player’s usual combat loop. The trade-off is that limited options can also make repeated encounters feel like trial and error, as discussed in Game Developer’s discussion of defenseless protagonists.
Uncertainty can keep anticipation active
Fear research often distinguishes fear of a present, identifiable danger from anxiety about an uncertain future threat. The boundary is not universally settled, and the experiences can overlap. Applied to games, a chase may create immediate fear, while wondering whether the pursuer will return can sustain apprehension after the chase ends. This is an interpretation of the psychology in a game-design context, not a clinical diagnosis of players or a direct experiment comparing enemy types. See the review “The Nature and Neurobiology of Fear and Anxiety” and research on how environmental certainty relates to threat responses (“Environmental Certainty Influences the Neural Systems Regulating Responses to Threat and Stress”).

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Uncertainty can concern more than whether an enemy is nearby. The player may not know when it will appear, what it can do, or whether a tactic will work. If combat cannot reliably settle the danger, each unknown can remain relevant. Horror-film research offers a related perspective: suspense involves tension before a threat appears and its eventual resolution, but studies and explanations of horror responses are mixed. A 2024 theoretical review proposes predictive processing as one framework for understanding uncertainty and horror; it presents hypotheses, not a settled account of why people enjoy frightening media (review of empirical horror-film research; 2024 predictive-processing review).
What makes an unstoppable enemy work
Invulnerability alone does not make a monster scary. The pressure comes from how the design combines limited control with uncertainty, pacing, and meaningful ways to respond. These are useful comparison questions, not a validated scoring system:

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
- Player control: Can the player end the threat, or only react to it?
- Predictability: Can the player read the enemy’s timing, location, and behavior?
- Cost of confrontation: Does fighting consume scarce resources or leave the player vulnerable?
- Available agency: Can the player hide, distract, escape, or change the environment?
- Threat pacing: Does the enemy remain a possibility in the background, or interrupt play so often that tension becomes routine?
- Resolution: Does the encounter eventually offer relief or a new way to act?
In an interview about Amnesia: The Dark Descent, creative director Thomas Grip described players finding the game scarier when they were not focused on enemies. Darkness and uncertainty about what a monster could do could matter more than a direct encounter. Grip said “the players thought it was scarier” in describing those reactions; that is developer testimony, not a controlled finding about all players or games (Ars Technica interview).

Removing the ability to fight can heighten vulnerability, but vulnerability on its own can become frustrating or monotonous. The creative director of Dead Space 2 discussed controlling player power as one approach to horror, while emphasizing that the aim was to create frightening situations rather than simply make players feel helpless (Game Developer interview).

- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
A fightable enemy can still be frightening if combat is costly, uncertain, or exposes the player to other dangers. Conversely, an unstoppable enemy may lose its impact if its appearances become too predictable, too frequent, or offer no meaningful response. The difference is not simply whether a weapon works; it is whether the encounter leaves the player with an understandable, tense problem to manage.
