Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can preserve Nintendo Switch game progress with Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves for supported games or transfer saves directly between consoles. To play a game on another Switch, use its physical game card or Nintendo’s supported digital-game access options. These are separate tasks: game software and save data are stored and managed differently.
First, separate the game from its save data
A game card or digital download provides the game software. Save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on the game card or microSD card. Nintendo says save data cannot be saved or copied to microSD. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ also explains that archiving or deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data. You can redownload the software later and continue with the save that remains on the console.
That distinction determines what to do: backing up or moving progress requires a save-data option, while playing the game on another console requires access to the game software.
Choose the right option for your situation
| What you need | Official option | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Recover progress after losing access to a console | Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud | The game must support cloud backup, and an active membership is required to access backups. |
| Move progress while you have both consoles | Transfer a user and save data, or an individual save, through System Settings | The transferred save is removed from the source console. |
| Play a physical game on another console | Insert the game card into that console | The card does not carry the save data. |
| Play a digital purchase on another console | Use the purchasing Nintendo Account and Nintendo’s virtual game card or online license features | Console and account setup affect access; progress must be backed up or transferred separately. |
Back up supported saves with Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo says the vast majority of Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games support Save Data Cloud, but not every game does. Check the specific title’s compatibility in the Nintendo eShop or its product information, and confirm that the save backup has completed before relying on it. Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud support information describes the service and eligibility.

An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to access cloud backups. If a membership expires, backups become inaccessible; Nintendo says users who resubscribe within 180 days of expiration can access their previous backups. That window is not a guarantee that every game has a cloud backup, so check the title and backup status before changing consoles.
Transfer a save directly between consoles
If the original console is available, Nintendo provides local transfer options. Use System Settings to transfer a user and save data, or choose the option for an individual game’s save. This route can be useful for games that do not support cloud backup.

Play the game on a different Switch
Physical game cards
Insert the game card into the other console and launch the game from the HOME Menu. The card makes the game software available there, but it does not include your save. Use a supported cloud backup or transfer the save separately if you want to continue existing progress. Nintendo’s virtual game card and game access guidance covers the current options for playing games across consoles.

Digital purchases
Sign in with the Nintendo Account that purchased the game and follow Nintendo’s current instructions for virtual game cards or online licenses. Which method applies depends on how the consoles and account are set up. Accessing or redownloading the game does not move its save data; use cloud backup or a local transfer for progress.
If the original console is unavailable
Sign in to the purchasing Nintendo Account on the replacement console to access eligible digital purchases, following Nintendo’s current digital-game instructions. For progress, download a cloud save if the game supports Save Data Cloud and you have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. A local transfer requires the source console, so it is not a recovery option when that system is unavailable.

What “backup” does—and does not—mean here
Nintendo’s official Switch data-management instructions do not establish a consumer procedure for copying saves to microSD or making a separate playable dump of game software. Nintendo’s North American user agreement restricts copying software and bypassing or circumventing console protections except as permitted by law; it also warns that unauthorized modifications or devices may make a console or software unusable. Nintendo’s piracy information identifies games distributed through peer-to-peer networks or third-party file hosts as unauthorized copies.
These are Nintendo’s stated terms and guidance, not a complete legal analysis for every jurisdiction. The U.S. Copyright Office has a limited exemption for preservation of qualifying video games by eligible libraries, archives, or museums in specified circumstances; it does not establish a general consumer right to circumvent Switch protections for personal backups. The rules and outcome depend on location and facts.
