To check a PC game against a handheld, find the official label for that exact device, then judge performance separately from compatibility. On a Steam Deck, the label is Valve’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown rating, shown in the Steam library or store. On a supported Windows handheld, it is Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility status plus a separate Windows Performance Fit indicator. The first tells you whether the game can be used comfortably with the handheld’s controls and screen. The second estimates how the game is expected to run on that hardware. Neither result carries over to a different device.

Start with the exact handheld and platform

Handheld PC gaming has two separate official compatibility systems, and they do not measure the same things. Use the one that matches the device you plan to buy or already own.

Question Steam Deck Supported Windows handheld
Platform SteamOS, with Windows games run through Proton Windows (ASUS states the ROG Xbox Ally runs Windows 11)
Where the label appears Steam library or store page for the game Xbox app game page or compatibility channel
Labels Verified, Playable, Unsupported, Unknown Handheld Compatibility (Handheld Optimized, Mostly Compatible, Not tested) and Windows Performance Fit (Should play great, Should play well)
What it covers Controller input, display and text legibility, launcher navigation, and Proton and anti-cheat support Handheld Compatibility covers controls, iconography, text entry, resolution, and legibility. Windows Performance Fit covers expected frame rate on the named device
Community reports ProtonDB, which collects community Linux and Steam Deck reports Not stated as a source for Windows handhelds in the material reviewed

A result for one platform should never be treated as a result for the other. A Steam Deck rating says nothing about a Windows handheld, and a Windows Performance Fit label applies only to the device it names.

What each platform’s label measures

Steam Deck: Valve’s compatibility ratings

Valve describes the Steam Deck as a portable gaming PC, and it is explicit that a desktop game can still be a poor fit for the handheld. Its rating is more useful than a simple launches or does not launch answer because it evaluates usability. Valve’s Verified criteria cover controller input, display and text legibility, whether the launcher can be operated, and whether Proton and middleware, including anti-cheat, are supported.

Valve’s page states that ratings apply across LCD and OLED Steam Deck models. The review process is ongoing, so a rating reflects Valve’s current information rather than a permanent verdict.

Supported Windows handhelds: Xbox’s two signals

Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program is built on two distinct signals. In an August 20, 2025 article on Microsoft Game Dev, Editor in Chief Will Tuttle wrote that “The Handheld Compatibility Program is a new initiative that evaluates how PC games will scale to a handheld.”

  • Handheld Compatibility addresses how the game behaves on a handheld. Microsoft’s labels are Handheld Optimized, meaning titles are ready to go with default controller inputs, accurate iconography and in-game warnings, an intuitive text-input method, an appropriate full-screen resolution, and legible text; and Mostly Compatible, meaning the game may need minor setting changes. Xbox’s page also uses a Not tested status for games that have not been evaluated.
  • Windows Performance Fit estimates how a game performs on a specific supported device. Microsoft bases the estimate on frame-rate benchmarks from similar hardware, so the indicator is an expectation for the named device, not a measurement of your copy of the game.

ASUS presents the ROG Xbox Ally as a Windows 11 handheld that can access supported PC games from Xbox and other stores. Its FAQ states that Steam, Epic Games, and Battle.net can be accessed because the device runs Windows 11, subject to those games running on Windows. Store access does not prove that a game plays well on the device, so the Xbox indicators are the check that matters.

Step-by-step: checking one game against one handheld

  1. Write down three things: the exact game title, the store or launcher where you own it, and the handheld model. If the game is not installed yet, check its store listing and official compatibility information before buying.
  2. Steam Deck: open the game in your Steam library or on its Steam store page and find the compatibility rating in its details. Read the rating against the table below rather than relying on the badge alone.
  3. Supported Windows handheld: open the game’s page in the Xbox app or the compatibility channel. Read the Handheld Compatibility status first, then the Windows Performance Fit indicator. Confirm that the device named in the indicator matches your handheld.
  4. If the result is Unknown, Not tested, or too thin for your question, move to community reports, described below, and compare them carefully before deciding.
  5. Compare the result with your goal. A game can launch and still be uncomfortable with controller-only play, too small to read on the screen, or too slow for your preferred frame rate. Decide which of those you care about before you rely on any label.
  6. Recheck before you commit, especially after a game, operating system, Proton version, driver, or handheld change. The schedule is covered in the final section.

Reading a Steam Deck rating

Each Steam Deck label answers a different question, and the difference determines what you should do next.

Valve label What it means What to do
Verified The game works well out of the box on Steam Deck. Buy with the normal expectation that controls and display work without configuration.
Playable The game may need manual adjustments. Valve’s wording is “The game may require some manual tweaking by the user to play.” Its examples include manually selecting a community controller configuration or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Check whether the adjustments are acceptable for how you want to play. A controller-only player should look at the specific adjustment Valve describes.
Unsupported The game is currently not functional on Steam Deck. Do not expect it to run on the device. Check again after the rating changes, since Valve’s review is ongoing.
Unknown The game has not been checked. No conclusion is possible from the rating. Use the community reports and workflow described below.

Unknown is not the same as incompatible

Valve separates Unsupported from Unknown on purpose. An Unsupported rating is a finding that the game does not currently work on Steam Deck. An Unknown rating means nobody has evaluated the game yet, which is a gap in information rather than a failed test. Xbox’s Not tested status plays a similar role on Windows handhelds. Treat either one as a reason to look for more evidence, not as a reason to rule out the game.

Performance: what the frame-rate labels promise

Windows Performance Fit is the only official indicator in these programs that addresses expected frame rate, and its labels are program expectations rather than guarantees.

Windows Performance Fit label Expectation stated by Microsoft’s program Caveat
Should play great Averaging 60 FPS or better on the named supported device Xbox cautions that some games may need settings changes for optimal performance.
Should play well Averaging 30 FPS or better on the named supported device The same settings caveat applies. Microsoft describes this as the typical threshold, not a measured figure for every title.

If you need a specific frame-rate target, compare it with the label’s threshold and expect that the in-game settings you choose will change the result. The labels say nothing about performance on a different handheld.

Using community reports with context

ProtonDB is a community database of Linux and Steam Deck compatibility reports. It is useful when the official rating is Unknown, dated, or does not answer your question, such as whether a specific launcher or workaround is needed. Reports are user evidence, not official guarantees, so compare each one against your own setup before relying on it.

  • Game version and Proton version: match these to the version you will install.
  • Device: confirm the hardware model in the report matches your handheld, including whether it is an LCD or OLED Steam Deck where that matters.
  • Settings and workarounds: note any launch options, controller profiles, or manual fixes. A workaround that worked for one person is not an assurance that the game will work for everyone.

Troubleshooting branches

  • Steam Deck shows Playable and you need controller-only play: read the specific adjustment Valve describes and decide whether you can accept it before buying.
  • Steam Deck shows Unknown: look for recent ProtonDB reports that match your game version, Proton version, and device. If none match, the game is still unverified for your setup.
  • Steam Deck shows Unsupported: do not rely on community workarounds as a substitute for an official result without checking whether the rating has changed.
  • Windows handheld shows Mostly Compatible: plan for minor in-game setting changes, such as controller mapping or text-entry adjustments, and test those before you rely on the game.
  • Windows handheld shows Not tested: the game has not been evaluated. Use the store page and any other official information you can find, and expect a higher uncertainty than with a tested result.
  • Handheld Compatibility is good but Performance Fit is weak: the game may be easy to control and read but still too demanding. Lower settings and expect a different result from the labelled benchmark.

When to recheck a result

A compatibility result is a snapshot. Check it again whenever one of these changes:

  • The game receives a major update, patch, or new release that changes how it runs.
  • The operating system, Proton version, or graphics driver changes on your handheld.
  • You switch to a different handheld model or move from one platform to another.
  • Valve or Microsoft updates the rating or indicator. Valve describes its reviews as ongoing, and Microsoft says its program continues to test existing and new games.

Use the official label as the starting point, use the Windows Performance Fit or Steam Deck rating for the device you actually own, and let community reports fill in the details the official label does not answer.
