A handheld gaming PC is usually better if you want to play with built-in gamepad controls in a compact, holdable device. A gaming laptop is usually better if you want a larger screen, a keyboard, more graphics options, or one machine for gaming and everyday PC work. Neither category wins on battery life or travel convenience across the board: compare the exact models, games, settings, and full travel kit you expect to use.
What kind of portable play do you want?
The core difference is how you use the device. A handheld puts its screen and controls together, so you can play in your hands or set it on a surface. A laptop gives you a larger display and built-in keyboard, but usually expects a desk, tray, or other place to rest it. Lenovo describes the Legion Go as a Windows PC in handheld form; ASUS describes its ROG Xbox Ally X20 as a Windows 11 device integrating Xbox and major PC storefronts.
- Choose a handheld first if integrated controls, couch gaming, or playing in a cramped seat matter most.
- Choose a laptop first if you want a larger screen, keyboard-and-mouse play, or the same device for school, work, creation, and other PC tasks.
How do size, screen, and carrying weight compare?
Handhelds tend to be easier to hold and pack, but their screens are smaller. Laptops can offer a more comfortable view of detailed games, while adding a keyboard and a larger chassis. These examples illustrate the range, not a controlled comparison of equivalent devices:
| Example | Display | Listed weight |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED | 7.4-inch OLED | 640 g (TechRadar, 2026) |
| Lenovo Legion Go S | Not stated in the cited 2025 announcement | 740 g (Lenovo, 2025) |
| Lenovo Legion Go 2 | 8.8-inch OLED, 1920 × 1200, 144 Hz | 1,079 g with controllers; Lenovo’s 2025 announcement labels this configuration a prototype |
| ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2025 example) | 14-inch OLED, 2880 × 1800, 120 Hz | 3.5 lb (Tom’s Guide, 2026) |
Lenovo’s 2025 gaming-laptop examples include displays up to 16 inches and configurations starting below 2.0 kg; those are product-line examples, not a baseline for every gaming laptop. For travel, compare the machine plus its charger and any accessories you actually need. A laptop power adapter can add meaningful weight, and the cited sources do not provide comparable complete-kit weights.

Which gives you better gaming performance?
Do not assume that a laptop or handheld will run your games better solely because of its category. Gaming laptops include configurations with more powerful discrete graphics; Lenovo’s 2025 examples reach GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU configurations, while Tom’s Guide lists up to RTX 5080 graphics for the 2025 Zephyrus G14. Those are specific configurations, not guarantees for every model or game. A handheld’s performance may be sufficient for the games you play, but its compact design and screen make the experience different from a higher-graphics laptop.
Before choosing, look for performance results for your actual games and the specific device configuration. Check resolution, graphics settings, and whether a result is plugged in or running on battery. Advertised GPU capability or a refresh-rate figure alone does not establish how well a particular game will run.

How long will each last away from an outlet?
Battery capacity, measured in watt-hours (Wh), is a specification—not a prediction of gaming hours. Lenovo lists 74 Wh for Legion Go 2 and 55.5 Wh for Legion Go S in its 2025 announcement. ASUS Canada lists 80 Wh for ROG Xbox Ally X20, while Lenovo listed 49.2 Wh for the original Legion Go in 2023. These capacities do not establish which device lasts longer in play.
For a runtime reference, TechRadar gives the Steam Deck OLED an editorial battery range of 2–8 hours and notes that intensive games can substantially reduce unplugged play. Tom’s Guide reports 5–6 hours of typical use for its reviewed 2025 Zephyrus G14, while describing battery life as a compromise; that figure is typical-use reporting for that reviewed machine, not a gaming-runtime result. These figures come from different sources and conditions, so they are not a head-to-head comparison.

Will your games and launchers work?
Compatibility can outweigh a hardware advantage if your must-play games do not work well on a device. ASUS describes the Canadian-market ROG Xbox Ally X20 as running Windows 11 with Xbox and major PC storefront integration. Windows handhelds and laptops can offer access to Windows launchers, but verify each game’s launcher, anti-cheat requirements, and controller support rather than assuming every title works.

Steam Deck OLED uses a Linux-based system, and TechRadar notes that not every Steam game is compatible. Check Steam’s game-specific compatibility information for the titles you care about before choosing it. Also consider whether a game is comfortable with handheld controls; compatibility does not necessarily mean the interface is ideal on a small screen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a handheld replace a gaming laptop?
It can replace one for someone whose main need is playing compatible games with a built-in gamepad and who does not need laptop-style work. It is not a like-for-like replacement if you rely on a keyboard, larger display, laptop graphics configurations, or desktop-oriented tasks. A detachable keyboard or dock may expand how a handheld is used, but it adds equipment and does not turn the device into the same form factor as a laptop.

Make the decision around the jobs the device must do. If gaming is the priority and your required games work on the handheld, the compact all-in-one controls may be worth more than a bigger screen. If the machine must also serve as your everyday computer, the laptop is generally the more natural fit.
A practical way to choose
- List your must-play games. Confirm each title’s storefront, launcher, anti-cheat support, and device compatibility.
- Choose your control style. Decide whether you prefer integrated gamepad controls or a laptop keyboard and mouse.
- Set a screen-size threshold. Compare the actual display dimensions and resolution of the models, not just the product category.
- Check model-specific performance. Find results for your games, configurations, and intended settings; do not treat peak specifications as real-world performance.
- Compare unplugged play for your workload. Prefer tests using the same game and similar settings. Do not infer gaming runtime from battery capacity or typical-use claims.
- Weigh the full travel setup. Include the charger, case, and any controller, dock, or other accessory you need.
- Account for non-gaming use and storage. If you need a general-purpose PC, favor the laptop form. Check available storage and upgrade options on the specific configuration before buying.
Examples to compare—not universal winners
Lenovo’s Legion Go 2 is an 8.8-inch handheld example with a 1920 × 1200 OLED display, 144 Hz refresh rate, and 74 Wh battery; its 2025 announcement’s specification table identifies the listed device as a prototype. Lenovo’s product page identifies Legion Go 2 as an 8.8-inch handheld, but configurations and availability can differ by market. The older original Legion Go is a different model: Lenovo’s 2023 announcement lists a 49.2 Wh battery, detachable controllers, a kickstand, FPS mode, and USB-C connectivity.
ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally X20 is another Windows handheld example. Its cited specifications and availability are from ASUS Canada, so check the local product page for your region rather than assuming identical configurations everywhere.
For a smaller handheld reference, TechRadar lists Steam Deck OLED at 640 g, with a 7.4-inch OLED screen and 512 GB or 1 TB storage. Its reported 2–8 hour battery range is an editorial estimate, not a promise for every game.
For a laptop example, Tom’s Guide’s 2026 guide lists the 2025 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 with a 14-inch, 2880 × 1800 OLED screen, 120 Hz refresh rate, up to RTX 5080 graphics, and a 3.5 lb weight. Its 5–6 hour typical-use report applies to the reviewed machine and should not be read as gaming runtime for all G14 configurations.
