Start by deciding what you want to keep—such as its combat, exploration, collection, or co-op—and what you want less of, such as daily tasks, long sessions, or competitive pressure. Then use a few discovery methods to build a shortlist that fits your time, platform, and budget.
Decide what you want from your next game
Before browsing, take a few minutes to make a simple, personal list: three things you enjoyed in the game you finished and two things you would like a break from. This is a practical way to focus your search, not a test or a rule about how you should feel.
- Keep: for example, responsive combat, exploring a large world, collecting, building, cooperative play, competition, or a particular kind of story.
- Change: for example, daily obligations, long sessions, monetized progression, or the pressure of competitive matches.
Your next pick can preserve the part you most want to return to, or offer a deliberate change of pace. You might look for a similar combat loop in a finite campaign, or trade multiplayer for a puzzle game. Neither route is inherently better; the point is to search for the experience you want now.
Turn your preferences into useful search terms
Translate your list into a few concrete filters rather than searching only for “something like” the game you finished. Combine a core activity with the kind of structure and social play you want.

- Core activity: combat, exploration, building, puzzles, collection, narrative, or a combination.
- Social shape: solo, drop-in co-op, coordinated co-op, or competitive multiplayer.
- Structure and pace: a finite campaign or ongoing updates; short sessions, longer sessions, or flexible stopping points.
- Progression: advancement at your own pace, or a game built around recurring events and daily tasks.
For example, if you want to keep exploration and discovery but step away from daily tasks, search for exploration-focused games and inspect their descriptions for campaign structure and recurring systems. Tags help surface candidates; they do not confirm how a specific game handles progression, so check its current store page and other reliable coverage before deciding.
Use several routes to discover candidates
Start with storefront recommendations, but treat them as a starting point
Steam is one documented example of a storefront with personalized discovery features. Valve’s Steam Discovery Update describes recommendations, the Discovery Queue, community Curators, a Recommendation Feed, and searches by title, tag, and description, with filters including tags, Steam features, operating system, and language. It also describes options to wishlist, follow, or ignore products. That page’s changelist is dated September 22, 2014, so its description should not be taken as confirmation of today’s exact labels or navigation. Other storefronts may offer different tools.

Valve’s July 11, 2019 Interactive Recommender announcement explains that its model used playtime history and behavior across Steam users, with controls to limit the release window and adjust popularity. Valve also described a cold-start limitation: “The model can’t recommend games that don’t have players yet, because it has no data about them.” In practice, an algorithmic list can help you find candidates, but it cannot represent every suitable game—especially titles without enough player activity for that model.
Valve reported in a September 5, 2019 Steam Labs update that nearly 10,000 different games had been added to wishlists from the Interactive Recommender page. That is a company-reported activity figure from 2019, not evidence of recommendation quality or current use. Valve also described Steam Deep Dive in 2019 as an experiment that used creator and community tags to surface very similar, somewhat similar, and lesser-known well-liked games. Do not assume that experiment remains available in the same form.

Search tags and features manually
Search for the activities and modes you identified, then apply the filters your storefront provides. A tag-based search can uncover games outside the recommendations generated from your past play. Steam’s Discovery Update page documents tag and feature filters as part of its discovery tools, but interface details may change.
Add human recommendations and previews
Curators, trusted players, and editorial coverage can help explain why a game might suit you and what its structure is like. Look for recommendations that address your specific preferences rather than relying only on a broad genre label. Where available, use a demo or preview to see whether the basic play feels right before committing.

Compare a shortlist against the way you want to play
Keep the shortlist small enough to evaluate. For each candidate, check current, title-specific information rather than assuming that a genre or tag guarantees a certain experience.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Structure | Is it a finite campaign or an ongoing game with updates? Does it offer a clear ending or open-ended progression? |
| Time demand | Does it suit the session length you want? Are there flexible stopping points? Avoid assuming a completion time without reliable information about that specific title. |
| Social play | Can you play solo? Is co-op drop-in or coordinated? Is competition central? |
| Core activity | Does it deliver the combat, exploration, building, puzzles, collection, or narrative you are looking for? |
| Progression pressure | Can you progress at your own pace, or does the game emphasize recurring events or daily tasks? Check the current game details. |
| Access and cost | Does it run on your platform? Is it available through a subscription you already use, has a demo, or is on sale? Check current access and price before deciding. |
There is no need to find a perfect substitute. If one candidate matches the activity you miss and another better fits the time and social setup you want, that is a useful trade-off to recognize before you start.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTry one option without making it a new commitment
If a candidate looks promising, make the first step small. Try a demo where available, start with a short session, or revisit a game already in your library. A borrowed or subscription-accessible title may also be an option, depending on what is available to you. These routes are possibilities, not guaranteed benefits for any particular game or platform.
After that first try, ask whether you want more of the core activity and whether the structure fits your current routine. If not, return to your list: you can change the kind of experience you are seeking without needing to replace the finished game immediately.
