Can you fish in Baldur’s Gate 3?
The documented Fishing Rod item is not described as usable fishing equipment. Its listed role is as a common miscellaneous item for bartering or selling; it may also appear in the world as set dressing or random loot. Finding a rod in a container or seeing one in the environment does not, by itself, indicate that you can cast it or catch fish.
The item documentation reviewed here does not establish a player fishing activity, fishing locations, a catch minigame, or a process for turning a rod into a catch. This is a statement about what the current item documentation describes, not a guarantee about mods or any later game update.
Can you use bait?
No bait-selection or bait-use mechanic is described on the Fishing Rod or Fish item pages. The rod’s listed purpose is trade, while fish are documented as food items acquired through loot or traders. There is therefore no documented bait to equip or use as part of fishing.

How do you get fish?
The Fish item page lists loot and traders as sources. A Bucket of Fish usually contains fish, so picking up a bucket may provide food items without requiring the player to catch them.
Fishing Rod item details
The common Fishing Rod is listed at 1 kg (2 lb) and 5 gp. Its flavor text reads, “Rusted and slick with grime. The lure may be more valuable than the rod itself.” That is in-game item flavor text, not an explanation of a fishing system.

Bucket of Fish details
The common Bucket of Fish is listed at 0.2 kg and 1 gp. It can be picked up or thrown and usually contains fish. Some buckets can also be used as containers; their distinct appearance may help with inventory organization.
What can you do with fish?
Fish are single-use food items that can be spent as Camp Supplies to initiate a Long Rest. The ordinary Fish entry is listed at 4 Camp Supplies, 0.2 kg (0.4 lb), and 4 gp. A larger fish variant is listed at 10 Camp Supplies, 2 kg (4 lb), and 10 gp; it can appear as random loot and in Buckets of Fish. These are in-game item values listed by the item documentation.

In practical terms, keep fish if you want the Camp Supplies for a rest; otherwise, treat them as ordinary inventory items rather than the result of a fishing activity.

The cited item descriptions support a straightforward distinction: the rod is documented as trade/set-dressing loot, and fish are documented as food supplies. They do not describe fishing steps or bait options. The wiki’s home page reported a latest game update of 29 September 2026 when checked on 7 October 2026; later patches or mods may differ.
