Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A used PlayStation is a sound purchase when five things check out: the model plays the games you own, the previous owner has fully let go of the console, the installed system software is confirmed on the device itself, the hardware works as listed, and the seller’s return and warranty terms are written down. Jailbreak compatibility is a separate question. It depends on the exact model and firmware version, and no firmware threshold should be trusted unless it comes from a current, specialist source.
Start with the model and the games you own
Before comparing listings, match the console to your library. The model decides which discs you can play, whether you can add a drive later, and which software version you will be dealing with.
The most important mismatch is between PS4 discs and the PS5 Digital Edition. Sony states that PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. If your collection is mostly physical PS4 discs, a PS5 Digital Edition is the wrong choice regardless of price. Sony’s backward compatibility list, which covers which PS4 games run on PS5 consoles, is published on its PS5 backward compatibility page. Check any specific title there before you assume it runs.
Decide on three things first:
- Whether you need a disc drive, or whether digital purchases are enough.
- Which generation your games require.
- Whether a listing that names a model number matches the console you actually see in photos.
Confirm the seller has deactivated the console
Ownership is the first gate. Sony’s official US buying guide puts it plainly:

“If you’re buying a console, make sure that the seller has deactivated it and no longer has access to it.”
Sony’s guidance is about the seller’s access to the machine and its account link. A console still tied to the seller’s account can lock you out of features, and the seller may still be able to access the device. Before you pay, ask the seller to confirm in writing that they have deactivated the console and no longer have access to it. If the seller cannot or will not do this, treat the purchase as a higher-risk transaction.
Sony also recommends buying from authorized retailers for functionality, authenticity, return policy, and warranty coverage. A private sale can work, but it gives you fewer protections, so the checks below matter more.

Check the system software on the console
Firmware is a property of the individual console, not of its model name. Two PS4s from the same production run can have different installed versions, depending on how and when each was last updated. Do not infer the software version from the model, the age of the listing, or the seller’s description.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ask the seller to show you the system software information on the console itself, before purchase, and check it yourself if you can. Sony’s support page explains how to check for updates on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles, including where the version information appears in each console’s settings. Record the version number so you can compare it later against any compatibility information you find.
Two practical points follow from this:
- A version that is out of date is not automatically a problem. You can update the console once you own it, but you should know the starting version before you decide anything that depends on it.
- A seller who cannot or will not show the console’s software information has not given you the information you need to evaluate the purchase.
Inspect the hardware and accessories
Sony’s official pages do not provide a diagnostic checklist covering every used model, so the following are practical inspection steps rather than manufacturer procedures. Ideally, test the console in person or with the seller on a video call before paying.

- Play online with your friends, save games online and more with PlayStation Plus membership (sold separately).

- Mount is not included
- Power: The console powers on and reaches the home interface without error messages or repeated restarts.
- Display: It produces a stable picture on a television or monitor over HDMI, and the picture does not flicker or drop out.
- Disc drive: If the model has one, it reads and ejects a disc cleanly. Test with a game you know works, and note any grinding or repeated read failures.
- Ventilation and noise: The fan does not rattle or run at full speed immediately after startup.
- Accessories: The controllers, cables, and power supply listed in the ad are included, and the controllers respond to every button and stick.
- Casing: No cracks, loose ports, or signs that the console has been opened, unless the seller discloses it.
Use the listing to compare these items. A listing that says “tested” without describing what was tested tells you less than one that lists each check.
Compare return and warranty terms in writing
A used or refurbished label does not define your protection. Warranty and return terms vary by seller and by region, and they can differ from the terms that apply to a new console from the same brand. Before you buy, get the following in writing:
- The return window, in days, and who pays return shipping.
- Whether the warranty is from the seller, the retailer, or the manufacturer, and what it covers.
- Whether the terms apply to hardware failure, to accessories, or both.
- Whether the seller’s terms are the same in your country as in the country stated on the listing.
If the terms are unclear or only verbal, that is a reason to walk away or to pay through a method that offers buyer protection.

Jailbreak compatibility: what can and cannot be verified
Many buyers want a console that can be jailbroken, and many listings describe a console as “jailbreakable.” That label is not dependable on its own. The safest way to approach this question is to separate what official sources say from what community sources report.
What Sony’s official material establishes
Sony’s official support material explains how to check system software, but it does not certify any console for jailbreak use. Official sources therefore cannot confirm a jailbreak claim.
What community sources add
The ConsoleMods wiki’s PS4 FAQ is maintained by the community, not by Sony. It states that second-hand consoles can have different firmware and that buyers should ask the seller what version is installed. It also says that access to PlayStation Network requires current firmware. Treat these points as useful context, and verify any current claim from a specialist source before you rely on it. The FAQ is not a definitive, current version-by-version table.

Why this article does not list firmware thresholds
No current, dependable version-by-version compatibility table for PS4 or PS5 has been established here, so this article does not publish firmware thresholds. An exploit threshold that appeared in an old forum post may no longer be accurate, and a seller’s statement about firmware is not a substitute for a checked version number.
Keep two things separate. Running custom software on a console is not the same as using PlayStation Network normally. Community sources say that online service depends on current firmware, so a console kept on an older version may not work the way you expect online, even if it is otherwise compatible with a modification. Before buying for jailbreak use, confirm the exact model and exact firmware version against a current specialist compatibility source, and confirm what online features you will lose.
Storage replacement on the PS4 Pro
If the console you are considering has a failing or inadequate internal drive, storage replacement may be possible, but only for specific models. Sony’s safety guide for the CUH-7106B PS4 Pro, which belongs to the CUH-7100 model family, describes removing and replacing the internal hard drive. Do not assume the same steps apply to other PlayStation models, and confirm your exact model number before buying a replacement drive.
Checklist before you pay
- Confirm the model number and the disc format you need, and check whether the console’s drive type matches your library.
- Get the seller’s written confirmation that the console is deactivated and that they no longer have access to it.
- Record the installed system software version, checked on the console itself.
- Test power, display, disc reading, fan noise, and each included controller and cable.
- Get the return window, warranty coverage, and regional terms in writing.
- For jailbreak use only, verify the exact model and firmware against a current specialist source and confirm which online features will be affected.
Following this order means you learn the most important facts first, before you spend time on the hardware checks.
