Not in the unmodded game: Baldur’s Gate 3’s Fishing Rod is loot for bartering or sale, not a tool for a built-in fishing activity. A community post dated October 6, 2026 reports that a console mod called SimpleFishing adds a fishing skill, but check your platform’s in-game mod browser for current availability and instructions.
What the Fishing Rod does in the vanilla game
The BG3 Wiki lists the Fishing Rod as a common miscellaneous item, primarily useful for bartering or selling to traders. It may appear as set dressing or random loot. The item page lists its weight as 1 kg (2 lb) and its price as 5 gp; those are item-reference details, not evidence of a playable fishing mechanic. BG3 Wiki: Fishing Rod
In other words, finding or carrying a rod does not let you cast a line or start a fishing minigame in the unmodded game.
Can a console mod add fishing?
A community report dated October 6, 2026 says that SimpleFishing was approved for console and adds a fishing rod that grants a fishing skill. That is a recent community report, not a guarantee that the mod is currently available to every console player. Search for SimpleFishing in the in-game mod browser on your platform and read its current listing before installing it. Community report about SimpleFishing

What controls should you use?
There is no verified fishing-specific button sequence for SimpleFishing in the cited sources, so do not assume that selecting a rod or pressing a particular button will start fishing. Follow the mod’s current in-game prompts if it is available.

The PlayStation Blog also explains that a controller supports direct character movement and Cursor Mode for actions that benefit from point-and-click precision.
