To manage Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2, set Nintendo’s console restrictions for age ratings and communication, then configure the child’s Microsoft/Xbox family permissions if they will use Minecraft online. Use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for play-time limits and activity reports. These are separate controls, and Minecraft says the stricter platform or Microsoft setting applies.
Choose where to manage the controls
You can set age-rating and in-game communication restrictions directly on the console, or use the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. The app also provides daily play-time limits and play activity; those features cannot be fully managed from the console alone. Nintendo notes that many restrictions apply system-wide rather than to just one user, so settings on a shared console may affect other players.

Set Nintendo’s age-rating and communication restrictions
- On the Switch 2, open System Settings → Parental Controls.
- Choose the software-rating organization used in your region and set the age threshold that fits your child. Available presets include Child, Pre-Teen and Teen, as well as custom settings.
- Review the communication restriction. Presets differ in what they allow; you can customize restrictions and adjust communication for specific software. Check the effect on other users if the console is shared.
For Nintendo’s setup details, see How to Set Up, Adjust, or Remove Parental Controls on Nintendo Switch 2 and its Parental Controls Overview/FAQ.
Use the Nintendo app for time limits and activity
Pair the console with the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to set daily play-time limits, bedtime or morning restrictions, and review which games were played and for how long. The app can also manage the console restrictions described above. Nintendo’s Parental Controls FAQ explains the available controls.

Manage Minecraft online permissions in the child’s Microsoft account
Nintendo’s restrictions and Minecraft’s Microsoft/Xbox account permissions are distinct layers. If the child uses Minecraft online, review the child account’s family safety settings for multiplayer, clubs and Realms. Minecraft says it follows whichever setting is more restrictive: the Microsoft account or the platform’s built-in controls. To turn off online multiplayer, disable the child account’s multiplayer permission as well as checking the Nintendo restrictions; don’t assume a single setting governs both layers.
For the account permissions and family-group setup, use Minecraft’s Parental Controls in Minecraft and Set Up Microsoft Family Groups for Parental Controls in Minecraft. Minecraft’s guidance on child accounts is at Buying Minecraft for a Child Account on a Console or Mobile Device.

Sign in with the intended child account
On the Switch, choose Sign in with a Microsoft Account in Minecraft. Follow the displayed code instructions in a browser on a phone or computer, and confirm that the account being connected is the child’s intended account. Microsoft sign-in is needed for cross-play. See Sign in to Minecraft with a Microsoft Account on Nintendo Switch for the current steps.
Know when an online subscription is needed
Nintendo Switch Online is required for Minecraft online multiplayer on Switch. It is not required just to configure parental controls. Check Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements if you are deciding whether online play is part of your setup.

Keep Switch 2 GameChat separate from Minecraft
GameChat is a Switch 2 system feature, not Minecraft’s own chat. Nintendo requires app setup for children under 16 and supervised users who want to use GameChat. GameChat approvals and history do not replace Nintendo’s Minecraft communication restrictions or Microsoft account permissions. See Nintendo’s guide to managing a child’s GameChat experience.

Mojang says player-safety features were introduced over time starting with version 1.16.4. These parental-control features are not provided for earlier versions or modded game versions, so keep Minecraft updated and use an unmodded version when relying on those features.
