Fix Blair Witch according to where the problem occurs: a black screen when starting a new game on Windows N may need the Media Feature Pack; a launch crash on an Intel 10th-generation-or-newer CPU has a documented OpenSSL SHA workaround; and low FPS calls for measured, one-setting-at-a-time diagnostics rather than a guaranteed fix. First note the exact failure point and check your system against the published requirements.
Before troubleshooting, identify where Blair Witch fails
“Game crashes on startup” can describe different failures. Record whether Blair Witch closes before the intro, during the videos, after the “press any key” screen, or after you choose New Game. Also copy any error text and note your Windows edition, processor, graphics card, storefront, and whether the game has ever launched successfully. Blair Witch crashes on startup or after “press any key”
If you have an Intel 10th-generation-or-newer processor
PCGamingWiki flags a launch crash affecting Intel 10th-generation and later CPUs and points to an OpenSSL SHA workaround. Use the current instructions linked from the PCGamingWiki Blair Witch page, checking whether the workaround changes a per-game launch option or a system-wide environment setting. Do not apply a system-wide change unless you understand how to reverse it; restore the prior setting if troubleshooting does not help.

If the crash happens after the intro videos
A November 2019 Steam discussion quotes a developer suggesting the alternate Blairwitch-Win64-Shipping-Win7.exe in BlairwitchBinariesWin64 as a temporary workaround for a crash around the intro videos. This is historical advice, not confirmation that the executable remains available or appropriate in current installations. Check for a newer official fix first, and only try it if that file exists in your game folder. See the Steam discussion cited for the workaround.
Consider a local configuration or save-folder test cautiously
In a Steam discussion, one player reported that deleting %LOCALAPPDATA%Blairwitch let them start the game; another participant said it did not fix their case. This is an individual report, not an official or universal solution, and the folder may contain saves. Before testing, back up the folder. Prefer renaming it to something like Blairwitch-backup so the game can create a fresh folder; if that changes nothing, close the game and restore the original folder. Do not apply an old date-specific explanation to a current crash
A developer-marked Steam reply on March 2, 2020 attributed a boot failure on February 29, 2020 to a leap-year date bug and said saves from before or after that date worked. That explains a specific historical incident; it does not diagnose present-day launch failures. The Steam thread contains the original context.
Black screen when starting a new game
If Windows is an N edition and the screen goes black when you start a new game, PCGamingWiki recommends installing the Media Feature Pack appropriate to your Windows version and then rebooting. Check your edition first: this recommendation is specific to Windows N and is not a general remedy for every black screen. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the installed version of Windows; the documented game-specific issue is on PCGamingWiki’s Blair Witch page.

Low FPS or uneven performance
The available sources do not establish a repeatable Blair Witch-specific FPS fix or a current benchmark. Use the requirements above as a compatibility baseline, not as an FPS promise. To isolate a performance bottleneck, change one variable at a time and note whether the result improves.
- Check the system baseline. Compare your CPU and memory with the listed minimum and recommended specifications. Note that the listed storage requirement is capacity, not a frame-rate measure.
- Confirm the game is using the intended GPU. On a laptop or other system with switchable graphics, check the operating system or GPU software’s per-app graphics preference for Blair Witch.
- Reduce resolution, then test graphics settings individually. Record the original values and compare performance after each change; do not assume one particular setting is a verified Blair Witch fix.
- Close competing workloads. Temporarily close other demanding applications and compare performance under otherwise similar conditions.
- Record what changed. Note the scene, settings, resolution, and observed frame-rate behavior before and after each test. This gives support a useful, reproducible description without assuming a target FPS.
