Play FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE first, then FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH if you want the story in sequence. Remake focuses on the events in Midgar; Rebirth continues the journey into the wider world. Rebirth can be played on its own, but starting there means missing the earlier story and character context.
Which game should you play first?
For a newcomer following the narrative, the order is FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE followed by FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH. Square Enix describes Rebirth as the second game in its remake project: Remake covers the Midgar portion, and Rebirth follows Cloud and his companions beyond the city. Square Enix’s Rebirth FAQ explains the relationship between the games.
Square Enix also describes Rebirth as a standalone adventure, so you can begin there. Standalone does not mean that it retells all of Remake or provides the same lead-in. If you know the series already or would rather jump straight in, Square Enix has an official recap of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE.
What changed from Remake to Rebirth?
The story moves beyond Midgar
Remake reimagines the original game’s events through the party’s departure from Midgar. Rebirth picks up with the escape from the city and takes the group across a broader world. They are successive chapters with different scope and settings, not interchangeable versions of the same stretch of story. Square Enix’s FAQ and the official Rebirth story overview outline that progression.

Rebirth offers more room to explore
Remake is the more directed, story-focused experience. Rebirth adds regional exploration, side quests, optional battles, and minigames, giving players more choice about what to do between major story beats. Director Naoki Hamaguchi described the intent in a February 29, 2024, Square Enix Blog interview: “We’ve definitely tried to respond to that and added many more layers of freedom, choice, and exploration into FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.” Read the interview with Hamaguchi.
Combat evolves rather than starting over
Both games combine fast-paced real-time action with strategic commands. Rebirth builds on that approach with Synergy abilities, which let two party members coordinate attacks. Developers have said they adapted elements of the original game to fit Rebirth’s gameplay; it is more accurate to think of an expanded system than a wholly different combat model. Platforms, editions, and progression options
Check the platform and edition before buying
Edition and platform availability differ between the games. Square Enix lists FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE as a physical and digital release on PS5, and digital releases on PC through Steam and Epic Games Store. Its enhancements include improved textures, lighting and backgrounds, graphics and performance modes, photo mode, and DualSense haptics. Square Enix’s Rebirth launch guide lists a physical PS5 Standard Edition with the full game on two discs, alongside digital options. Its physical Deluxe Edition includes a steelbook, mini soundtrack CD, and artbook; the Collector’s Edition includes a figure and other physical collectibles. The publisher also lists digital PC editions through Steam and Epic Games Store. These are publisher-described editions, not a guarantee of current stock. Check the Rebirth editions guide and the regional product listing for current availability where you live.

Square Enix has also documented a digital PC Twin Pack containing Remake Intergrade and Rebirth. The cited page previously advertised a discount that ended in 2025, so it should not be treated as a current offer. Check the Steam Twin Pack listing for current availability and terms; it is a digital bundle, not a physical package.
Optional progression settings in Rebirth
Square Enix’s update notice describes optional Streamlined Progression settings, including forgiving combat and item options, as well as New Game – Head Start. The notice says the options can be toggled individually. Its listed versions—PS5 version 1.090 and Steam/Epic version 1.005—are specific to that notice and may no longer reflect the latest release. Consult the official update notice for details and check the current version information for your platform.
