If you finished Final Fantasy VII Rebirth wanting more party loyalty, cinematic stakes and a world you can roam, four games make the strongest next steps: Persona 3 Reload, Tales of Arise, Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. Which one fits best depends on what you miss most. Each pick below names the quality it shares with Rebirth and the way it differs.
What Rebirth’s story is built on
Square Enix describes Rebirth as an action RPG and the second part of a three-part reimagining of Final Fantasy VII. Cloud and his companions leave Midgar in pursuit of Sephiroth, and the journey spreads across several regions. Combat blends action and strategy.
Bonds are the theme the director has named most directly. In a Sony Group Portal interview titled “Crafting Worlds, Shaping AAA Games,” Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, said: “For FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, we chose ‘bonds’ as one of the central themes.” Party relationships are therefore the most useful filter when choosing a follow-up.
Match the game to what you miss most
- Character bonds and social growth: Persona 3 Reload
- A fantasy party adventure with action combat: Tales of Arise
- Long-form cinematic storytelling where choices carry forward: Mass Effect Legendary Edition
- More time with the same cast and setting: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
These picks are based on publisher descriptions and official platform listings, not hands-on testing. The “match” is a reading of the features each publisher states, so read each entry as a shared quality, not a duplicate of Rebirth.

The four picks
Persona 3 Reload
Choose this if the bonds are what hooked you. PlayStation describes Persona 3 Reload as an emotional journey built around forging bonds and strategic combat. The main difference is structure. It runs on a calendar, and much of your time goes into scheduled daily activities that feed your relationships and your combat readiness. Rebirth’s regional wandering is looser. A free demo is listed for PS4 and PS5, so you can test the battle style before buying.
Tales of Arise
Choose this if you want a fantasy party and action-focused combat rather than a relationship-heavy story. Bandai Namco describes a tale of two people born on different worlds who want to change their fate, with a new cast and dynamic action RPG combat. It shares Rebirth’s genre and party-story appeal but not its characters or setting. The publisher’s listing also mentions the Beyond the Dawn expansion, so check whether your edition includes it.
Rank #2
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Choose this if you want cinematic storytelling in which earlier decisions carry forward. EA’s page says the collection includes single-player content from Mass Effect 1 to 3 and more than 40 DLC. It also says choices carry between the three games and affect relationships and the fate of the galaxy. The trade-off is science fiction and squad-based play in place of Rebirth’s fantasy exploration.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Choose this if you want the same characters from the beginning. Square Enix’s Rebirth page links both Remake versions and calls Rebirth the second entry in the project. Rebirth is standalone, and its official FAQ says it includes a recap of Remake, so you can start with Rebirth if you prefer. Playing Remake first gives the fuller route through the story, because the recap is a summary rather than a replacement. Remake is a preceding chapter, not a separate story world.
