Choose a co-op survival game by matching its building style, survival loop, group size, world hosting, and platform compatibility to your group—not by the “co-op” label alone. Valheim suits groups seeking survival progression and customizable bases; Enshrouded supports larger groups and dedicated servers; Minecraft is a strong fit for a shared sandbox or console couch co-op.
Start with the kind of building your group wants
“Base building” can mean different things. Some groups want a practical shelter that grows alongside crafting and survival progression; others want open-ended construction to be the main activity. Decide which experience matters before comparing games.
- Progression-led building: You gather resources, unlock or improve construction options, and expand a home as you explore and survive.
- Sandbox building: Construction and shared world play can take priority over a tightly guided survival progression.
- Defensible bases: If protecting buildings from enemy attacks is essential, verify that enemies actually target structures. A game with combat is not necessarily a base-defense game.
Compare the three options against your group’s needs
| Game | Building and progression | Group size and world availability | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valheim | Exploration, crafting, survival, biome and boss progression, and customizable longhouses and bases. The official FAQ also describes outposts, farms, crafting stations, and building tiers. | Iron Gate says servers are capped at 10 players. Groups can use a private or public peer-to-peer session; a dedicated-server application supports a world that stays available. | Iron Gate characterizes it as a co-op game for a few friends, not an MMO. Running a persistent dedicated server can require scripting knowledge and router configuration. |
| Enshrouded | Online co-op fantasy survival; it can also be played solo and offline. | Keen Games says up to 16 players can play together. Dedicated servers can keep a world available when a friend is offline; GPortal is named as an in-game rental partner. | The accessed FAQ says enemies attack players, not bases or dwellings, and notes this could change after Early Access. The FAQ describes a Steam Early Access launch first, with other platforms planned after completion; check current availability. |
| Minecraft | A shared sandbox for groups that value flexible construction and world play. | The official multiplayer page describes private Realms for Bedrock Edition and Java Edition Realms for Java Edition. Bedrock Edition on console also supports couch co-op. | Realms and couch co-op are different ways to play. Confirm the exact edition, device combination, and multiplayer compatibility; the official page is not a full cross-play matrix. |
Choose a world setup that fits how often everyone plays
Valheim: peer-to-peer or a self-managed dedicated server
A peer-to-peer session works when a player can host at play time. For a world that should remain available, Iron Gate provides a dedicated-server application. Its dedicated-server guide is specifically for the Steam version and includes setup instructions and console commands; the support guidance notes that persistent hosting may involve scripting and router configuration. This is a self-hosting option, not an official hosted world supplied by Iron Gate.
Enshrouded: dedicated server or rental
Keen Games says dedicated servers let friends join even when the player who started the world is offline. Its FAQ names GPortal as a rental partner accessible from within the game and says players may also rent through other providers. Treat renting as one hosting route, not a requirement to play together.
#1 Best Overall
- DEFEND THE LAST BUNKER: Earth has fallen to an alien invasion, and a colossal Mothership looms overhead. Work cooperatively as Bunker Leaders to survive relentless attacks, rebuild your settlement, and ultimately destroy the Mothership.
- A UNIQUE MASHUP OF MECHANICS: Experience a tense, strategic blend of classic trick-taking and desperate base-building. Win tricks to secure vital resources, but be careful—communication is limited, and every card played matters!
- OUTSMART THE ALIEN SABOTEUR: You aren't alone in the bunker. An automated Infiltrator Deck represents a hidden alien shapeshifter sabotaging your plans. If the Infiltrator wins a trick, the Mothership attacks your defenses!
- DYNAMIC BASE BUILDING: Visually build your defenses using an innovative card-tucking mechanic. Attach People, Weapons, and Shields to your Buildings to make them operational, increase your armor, and unlock powerful abilities.
- SOLO OR CO-OP SURVIVAL (1-4 PLAYERS): Features a dedicated, fully-fleshed-out Solo Variant ("The Outpost") for solo gamers, as well as highly replayable co-op for up to 4 players. (The box says 2-4. Solo mode was added after printing.)
Minecraft: distinguish a private online world from local play
Realms provide a private-server option, while console couch co-op is local play on Bedrock Edition. Decide whether your group needs a world available online at different times or expects everyone to play together on one console; then verify the edition and device requirements for that arrangement.
Check group size, platforms, and editions before buying
Use the official player limits as a hard filter if everyone needs to join the same session: Valheim’s FAQ states a 10-player server cap, while Enshrouded’s FAQ says up to 16 players can play together. Minecraft’s multiplayer page describes several modes but does not provide a complete cross-play matrix. A game appearing on multiple platforms does not, by itself, establish that those platforms can play together.
Rank #2
- Write down the platform and edition each person will use.
- Check the game’s current official compatibility information for that exact combination, including any edition-specific multiplayer requirements.
- Compare the number of simultaneous players with the documented limit for the mode you plan to use.
- Decide whether one player will host at play time, whether you will self-host a dedicated server, or whether you want a rental or private-world service.
Make the final choice by ruling out deal-breakers
- Choose Valheim if the group wants exploration, survival and crafting progression, customizable bases, and a friend-sized co-op experience—and is comfortable choosing between a host-led session and self-managed persistent hosting.
- Consider Enshrouded if a larger co-op group or a persistent dedicated world is important. Do not choose it specifically for enemy sieges on buildings based on the FAQ accessed here; it says enemies target players rather than bases or dwellings, and that may change after Early Access.
- Choose Minecraft if a shared sandbox, private Realms option, or console couch co-op better fits the group than a survival game centered on a defined progression loop. Confirm that everyone has a compatible edition and setup.
These are feature-based fits, not a measured ranking: the official information cited here does not establish which game is objectively best at cooperative base building.
