How to Build a Base That Survives Raids in Survival Games: A Principles-First Guide

No base survives every raid, but you can make attacks slower, costlier, and less rewarding. This guide covers the principles across survival games, with Rust numbers clearly labelled as Rust-only.

A base cannot be made raid-proof. What you can do is make an attack slower, more expensive, and less rewarding, so that raiders either give up, choose a worse target, or pay a price that makes the raid not worth it. This guide explains how to plan for that across survival games, with one clearly labelled exception: where Rust is used as an example, its numbers apply only to Rust and should not be assumed to carry over to Minecraft, DayZ, ARK, or any modded or community server.

What “survives a raid” can and cannot mean

In most survival games, a raid is a deliberate attack on a stored base by players who have the tools, time, and motive to get inside. No layout stops every raider. The developers of Rust have said this about their own raid design: in a Facepunch Studios devblog from 2017 (Devblog 158), they wrote that getting to the loot “shouldn’t be a fixed equation of sulfur and explosives,” and that raiding “should involve planning, risk and reward.” That is a useful framing for any game. If a single known formula opens your base, the attacker only needs to be patient. If the attacker has to decide how to reach your storage, what it will cost, and whether it is worth it, your base is doing its job.

So the realistic goal has three parts: raise the price of each entry route, keep the most valuable items out of reach of the cheapest route, and make sure a successful raid does not end your progress entirely.

Step 1: Establish the rules before you build

Every design decision depends on mechanics that differ widely between games. Before placing a single wall, write down the following for the game, mode, and server you actually play:

  • Whether structures decay or require upkeep, and what happens when upkeep runs out.
  • How building authorization works: whether one player’s access covers an entire base, a single room, or nothing at all.
  • What damages structures, including explosives, fire, melee, and tools, and whether any material is weak to a specific one.
  • Whether offline protection, raid windows, or cooldowns apply, and whether your server runs any mods that change them.
  • How respawns, storage, and bed or spawn points work, because these determine how much a successful raid costs you.
  • Team size and whether your group is solo, small, or large. A design that a duo can maintain can overwhelm a solo player.

Step 2: Choose a footprint you can keep up

Start with the smallest footprint that serves your real needs: a sleeping area, a workstation, and storage that fits what you actually use. Each additional room adds delay for an attacker, but also adds materials to build and maintenance to keep up. A base that is abandoned to decay because nobody can pay its upkeep is easier to raid than a small one that is maintained.

In Rust, upkeep is the clearest example of this trade-off. The official Rust Wiki’s Tool Cupboard article states: “All separate buildings require a tool cupboard to prevent them from decaying.” A detached second building therefore needs its own cupboard coverage, which means more resources to keep it standing. Facepunch’s 2018 Building 3.0 post explains that upkeep was added partly to limit very large builds, and that exposed outer pieces decay before the core does. The practical lesson applies elsewhere: outer layers are the first things to fail when maintenance lapses, so they are also the first thing to plan around.

Step 3: Remove the single obvious route to the core

An attacker who finds one cheap way in will use it, and the cheapest route is usually the one the builder forgot about. Use layers and internal separation so that no single breach gives direct access to everything. Keep the most valuable storage behind at least one more barrier than the front door, and avoid placing the main storage room directly behind the easiest entry point.

This is general strategy rather than a guarantee. Its purpose is to make the likely raid path uncertain, because an attacker who cannot predict where the loot is will spend more time and resources finding out. Rust’s developers describe raiding as planning and risk, not a fixed sequence, which is why varied layouts tend to hold up better than a single optimized design.

Step 4: Compare the weak points, not just the strongest wall

Before you upgrade anything, list the likely entry routes: doors, walls, floors, ceilings or roofs, windows, and any exposed storage or utility piece. Then compare how much each one costs to breach in the game you play. Upgrading only the strongest wall while leaving a cheap door in place is one of the most common mistakes.

Rust’s official item data gives a concrete example of how wide these differences can be. The Rocket item page lists the rockets needed to breach each structure tier and door type. These are Rust values only:

Rust target (official Rust Wiki, Rocket item page) Rockets listed Decay after upkeep runs out (official Tool Cupboard article)
Twig structure 1 1 hour
Wood structure 2 3 hours
Stone structure 4 5 hours
Metal structure 8 8 hours
Armored structure 15 12 hours
Wooden door 1 Not stated in this comparison
Sheet metal door 2 Not stated in this comparison
Garage door 3 Not stated in this comparison
Armored door 4 Not stated in this comparison

The table shows the logic even if the numbers are Rust-specific. A wooden door takes one rocket, which is the same cost as a twig wall. A strong wall behind a wooden door is therefore only as strong as the door. The Rust Wiki’s Wooden Door entry also describes that door as weak against fire and explosives. In any game, walk around your base and ask which single piece you would attack first if you were the raider. Then upgrade that piece before the others.

Step 5: Make defences useful during an active raid

A base that only resists is less effective than one that gives you a chance to respond. Where the game supports them, consider:

Moose The Worst-Case Scenario Card Game, Family Party Game, Ages 10+
  • From the creator of the fun card games Loaded Questions and Awkward Family Photos Greatest Hits.
  • The ALL NEW Worst-Case Scenario Card Game is different from trivia games with 0% trivia and 100% humorous fun
  • This game for adults and kids is based on the The New York Times bestselling Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook.
  • An easy-to-learn card game that is perfect for family game night. (Ages 10-Adult / 3-6 Players)
  • In this family card game for kids and adults, match how players rank five worst-case scenarios from 1 (Bad) to 5 (The Worst). Match correctly and score points. Score the most points...and win
  • Sight lines from inside the base to the most likely approach, so you can see an attacker before they reach the wall.
  • Protected firing or observation positions that are not exposed to the same route the attacker uses.
  • Traps, alarms, or other automated warnings, if the game allows them and you can maintain them.
  • Cover that lets you move between rooms without being in an open line of fire.

Keep these systems simple. Traps and turrets that block your own doors, need constant repair, or rely on a layout you cannot reproduce after a breach often cost more than they return. No universally best trap or turret placement has been established across games, so test what works on your server.

Step 6: Plan for loss and recovery

A design that cannot be breached does not exist, so plan for the moment a raid succeeds. Where the game allows it:

  • Spread resources, tools, and equipment across more than one storage location, so a single breach does not take everything.
  • Keep a low-cost fallback cache, such as a small stash with basic materials, somewhere the main raid path does not reach.
  • Check how respawns and spawn points work, because a respawn that is always close to the base can make raids easier to repeat.

These steps reduce the cost of a successful raid. They do not prevent one.

Step 7: Test the design before you commit resources

If the game offers a creative mode, a build server, or a private test world, use it to check access routes, line of sight, stability, and upkeep before you spend the materials. Rust’s official wiki documents its Creative Mode as a built-in system that can allow unrestricted building when a server enables it. Whether a comparable mode exists, and whether it lets you test raid resistance accurately, depends on the title and the server settings. Where no test environment exists, build a small section first and observe how it decays and how it responds to the cheapest attack you can afford to test.

How to compare base designs

When you choose between starter layouts or upgrade paths, judge each one on the same criteria rather than a single overall score:

  • Raid cost along the most likely entry routes, not just the strongest wall.
  • Upkeep and build time, including how often the base must be maintained.
  • How easily you can defend it while you are online.
  • Construction risk, meaning how easily a mistake leaves a weak seam.
  • Storage capacity and how that storage is divided across rooms.
  • How quickly you can recover after a breach.

The right balance depends on whether you play solo or in a group, on your server’s rules, and on how far into the game you are. A design that suits a small group in a low-raid server may be wrong for a crowded one.

Where the evidence stops

The clearest official sources for raid design are the Rust Wiki and Facepunch’s developer blogs. Those sources explain the reasoning behind Rust’s raid and upkeep systems and give exact values for Rust, but they are not build guides for other games, and they are not a measure of how often bases survive raids in practice. No broad, independent statistic on raid survival across survival games was found, so any claim about how often a base survives should be treated as unverified. Current values for damage, upkeep, and server configuration can also change after game updates, so check the game’s own documentation before you rely on a specific number.

Check Rust-specific figures in the table above against the current official Rust Wiki before using them, since patches can change them.
