XDefiant was Ubisoft’s free-to-play, team-based first-person arena shooter, built around fast matches, customizable loadouts and factions with distinct abilities. It is no longer playable: Ubisoft stopped new downloads, registrations and purchases on December 3, 2024, then shut down the online service in June 2025.
What was XDefiant?
Developed by Ubisoft San Francisco, XDefiant put teams of gunfighters called Defiants into objective-focused arena matches. Its defining mix was conventional first-person gunplay, loadout customization and faction abilities drawn from Ubisoft game worlds. Ubisoft described the launch experience as 6v6.
Ubisoft’s official game page described it as a fast-paced arena shooter with personalized loadouts and specialized factions. The game was free to play and operated as an online service; it was not a standalone offline campaign.
How did XDefiant play?
Players selected a faction and built a weapon loadout, then worked with their team to complete match objectives. Faction abilities gave each group a different role and tactical flavor, while the overall design emphasized quick, competitive rounds rather than a single-player story.

HotShot was one example of that design. In a May 2024 feature, Xbox Wire’s account of the mode described its run-and-gun pace alongside the game’s objective-centered faction approach. XDefiant did not include Team Deathmatch at launch, but that launch detail should not be taken as a description of every mode available later.
Which factions, maps and modes were in XDefiant?
Ubisoft listed five playable factions at launch. The company’s launch-era figures also included 14 maps and five modes; those numbers describe the launch lineup, not the total content added over the game’s lifetime.

Can you still play XDefiant?
No. Ubisoft stopped new downloads, registrations and purchases on December 3, 2024, and the game’s online service has ended. Ubisoft’s discontinuation announcement named June 3, 2025 as the planned final server day; its support retirement list records PC retirement on June 4, 2025. That one-day difference reflects the distinction between the announced server date and the later date recorded for PC support.

Ubisoft’s December 3, 2024 announcement explains the service wind-down, while the Ubisoft Help retirement listing records platform retirement information. Because XDefiant depended on its online service, owning or having previously downloaded it does not make it playable now.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did Ubisoft shut XDefiant down?
Ubisoft said XDefiant had not attracted and retained enough players over the long term to compete in the free-to-play first-person shooter market. The company concluded that the game was too far from the results needed to justify further major investment, and announced its discontinuation on December 3, 2024.

At the time, Ubisoft said more than 15 million players had played the game. That was the company’s cumulative player figure, not a count of people online at once or of active players when the servers closed. The figure and shutdown rationale came from Ubisoft’s discontinuation announcement and its community message.
