In Minecraft, rename a sheep exactly jeb_ to make its wool appear to fade through dye colors in a rainbow effect. The effect changes the sheep’s appearance, not the color of the wool it drops.
How to make a rainbow sheep
- Rename a name tag to
jeb_—all lowercase, with an underscore at the end. - Use the renamed name tag on a sheep.
A historical community summary also describes using a sheep spawn egg renamed jeb_. These instructions are not an official, current guide for every Minecraft edition or platform. Minecraft Wiki: Name Tag and Minecraft Wiki: Sheep describe the methods.
What the effect changes—and what it does not
The sheep’s rendered wool cycles through dye colors, giving it a rainbow appearance. According to the Minecraft Wiki account of the Easter egg, shearing or killing the sheep still yields wool in its original color. The trick is visual; the available account does not say that it changes the sheep’s behavior.
Why is it called the Jeb_ sheep?
The exact name used for the effect is jeb_, which is why players also call it a “rainbow sheep” or “disco sheep.” A developer’s explanation of the Easter egg’s origin has not been established in the cited sources, so claims about the name’s intended meaning or the creator’s motives are unconfirmed.
