In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, head east from Vermilion City to Route 11 and Diglett’s Cave. After reaching Route 2 and getting Flash if you qualify, return to Cerulean City and travel east through Routes 9 and 10 to Rock Tunnel. The tunnel leads to Lavender Town; from there, continue west toward Celadon City.

What you get for beating Lt. Surge

In FireRed and LeafGreen, Lt. Surge gives you the Thunder Badge and TM34, Shock Wave. The badge lets you use Fly outside battle.

Follow this route to Lavender Town

  1. Leave Vermilion City east. Take the exit to Route 11.
  2. Cross Diglett’s Cave. It connects the Route 11 side to Route 2. Near the Route 2 exit, an aide can give you HM05 Flash if you meet the eligibility requirement.
  3. Return to Cerulean City. From there, travel east along Route 9 and Route 10 to reach Rock Tunnel.
  4. Go through Rock Tunnel. Flash makes the tunnel easier to navigate, though the walkthrough does not identify it as mandatory.
  5. Continue from Lavender Town toward Celadon. Head west toward Route 8 and Celadon City.

Why you cannot finish Pokémon Tower yet

On your first visit to Lavender Town, a ghost blocks access to the upper floor of Pokémon Tower. You need an item obtained in Celadon before you can get past it, so continue west rather than trying to complete the tower now.

Check your game version

These directions are specifically for FireRed and LeafGreen. Lt. Surge appears in multiple Pokémon games, and the route order can differ between versions, remakes, and fan games. If you are playing a different edition, confirm the game before following this route.
