Minecraft author Duncan Geere wrote in a December 20, 2024 article that it takes longer to break than obsidian and estimated the wait at almost a minute and a half. That is an official approximate description, not a universal timing guarantee for every version or situation.
Why reinforced deepslate is the answer
In Minecraft’s December 20, 2024 Block of the Month article, author Duncan Geere calls reinforced deepslate “one of the hardest blocks in the game” and says it takes longer to break than obsidian. He estimates that a player must hold the use button for almost a minute and a half before it breaks.
That estimate is Mojang’s published description, not a separately documented test or a promise that the time is identical across editions, versions, and circumstances. It is still a useful direct comparison: the familiar answer “obsidian” does not account for reinforced deepslate.
What “hardest to break” can mean
The phrase can describe several different things: the longest ordinary survival breaking time, a block’s hardness statistic, resistance to explosions or other damage, or a block that cannot be broken under normal survival rules. Those are not interchangeable rankings. Mojang’s article supports reinforced deepslate as exceptionally slow to break and slower than obsidian; the available sources do not establish one universal ranking across every block, edition, mode, and effect.

- Slowest break in ordinary survival: reinforced deepslate is a strong answer based on Mojang’s comparison with obsidian.
- Unbreakable in normal survival: that is a separate category. Reinforced deepslate is not unbreakable; Mojang says it eventually breaks.
- Hardness or blast resistance statistic: these technical properties measure different things and should not be substituted for an observed or described breaking time.
Why a better pickaxe does not help
Geere specifically addresses the obvious workaround: an enchanted diamond pickaxe does not help with reinforced deepslate. The article therefore does not support recommending a stronger pickaxe as a way to speed up the process. Even after the block breaks, Silk Touch does not preserve it; Mojang says it crumbles.
Reinforced deepslate resists more than mining
Mojang’s article says reinforced deepslate cannot be pushed by pistons, exploded, destroyed by withers, or damaged by the Ender Dragon. Those properties explain why its reputation is not just about the time spent mining it, but they are distinct from its breaking time.

Where to find it
Reinforced deepslate is associated with ancient cities in the deep dark. Mojang says it began spawning in the Overworld with the Wild Update in June 2022. Its location is useful context if you encounter the block, but it does not change the distinction between a very slow block and one that is unbreakable.

Precise destroy-time figures can differ between Java and Bedrock and can change between releases. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.20.30 release notes, for example, list destroy-time values of 35 for obsidian and crying obsidian in Bedrock and 50 in Java in a parity table. Those are values recorded in those release notes, not a current, all-block ranking. They should not be used to overturn Mojang’s separate direct comparison of reinforced deepslate and obsidian or treated as a universal measure across versions.
