Forza Horizon 6 takes place in Japan. Its map is an inspired, gameplay-shaped composite—not a one-to-one recreation of a real Japanese region. Officially revealed examples include Tokyo City, roads inspired by the C1 loop and Gingko Avenue, and mountain passes such as Mt. Haruna and Bandai Azuma.
Is Forza Horizon 6 set in Japan?
Yes. Playground Games has confirmed Japan as the setting. That describes the game’s national inspiration, not a promise that players will explore a precisely mapped prefecture or a faithful slice of the country.
Art director Don Arceta explained that the goal is to capture Japan’s cultural essence in the Horizon style, rather than recreate the country “like for like.” Horizon maps combine and adapt inspirations to serve both the atmosphere of a place and the demands of gameplay. Xbox Wire’s interview with Playground Games discusses that approach.
What Japanese locations and landscapes are included?
The official map reveal names several real-world inspirations and game locations. Treat these as references for the fictional map, not evidence that the corresponding real roads or areas are reproduced exactly.

- Tokyo City: the game’s urban setting, with downtown streets.
- C1 loop and Gingko Avenue: named as road inspirations.
- Mt. Haruna and Bandai Azuma: mountain passes named in the reveal.
- Japanese Alps scenery: the reveal describes snowy mountain environments alongside the city.
The result is a mix of urban and mountainous scenery rather than a single real-world destination. Playground Games reports that Tokyo City is five times larger than Forza Horizon 5’s Guanajuato; that is the developer’s comparison, not an independent measurement. The announcement also reports more than 550 cars available at launch, though the car count does not indicate the map’s geographic accuracy.
Why did Playground Games choose Japan?
Playground Games has said Japan was one of the most requested destinations by Horizon players. The developers also pointed to the country’s distinctive car culture, music and fashion, as well as the contrast between modern and traditional settings. The team traveled to Japan for visual reference and worked with people familiar with Japanese culture. Xbox Wire identifies Don Arceta as art director and Kyoko Yamashita as cultural consultant in its interview about the game’s setting.
